Water ran in the background as you and Akutagawa played chess, him looking a little more focused than you'd had yet to see. A chuckle left your lips as he made, once again, the wrong move. The male looked at you confidently as you observed the board before taking your knight and knocking away his bishop.
"That's check," You told the black-haired person sitting in front of you, looking shocked. He looked over the board and then at you. Finally, he regained his calm demeanor, reclining into his seat.
"I see what you attempted to do there. However, by moving your white knight, you left your king open for an attack. Meaning..." Akutagawa slid his queen over to where your knight had been the moment before, checking your king as well. You snickered, moving your knight over to the king, kicking him downward.
"You need to focus on protecting your king. I didn't move my king because I could easily kill your king." You explained as Akutagawa tried to keep his cool, annoyed. This was his fifth loss to you- according to Gin, he lost to her all the time. Because of this fact, you know understood why he'd challenged you all the time when you had free time.
"Let's go again," He suggested. You rolled your eyes, taking up your chess pieces and setting them on the board.
"You know-" You cut yourself off when a knock at the door sounded. Wordlessly, Akutagawa got up to get it.
Akutagawa entered the room once again, holding a yellow folder. He opened the folder and pulled out what seemed to be a letter. You blinked, interested. But Akutagawa left, shortly after, leaving you to yell after your roommate.
"You can't just leave! We're in the middle of a game!"
"I have something very important I must do, Y/n. The Were-tiger... He will be on the Moby Dick... I must kill him while this chance is still there!" Akutagawa called out. You fumed, sitting down again on the couch angerly.
"AKUTAGAWA! STOP GALAVANTING OFF!" You screeched while he continued walking away. "You and your murder!" You scoffed out as he slammed the door to your apartment. Fingers drumming on your upper arms, you felt annoyance at Akutagawa and his Atsushi-session.
He was always doing this! Running off on a whim just because Atsushi was sure to be there! Besides, Akutagawa didn't even know if the source was reliable, and yet he was still going! As you stayed in the now empty room, you stared out at the chess pieces strewn aimlessly across the floor, ruined by Akutagawa's hurry. Tsking, your finger-strumming became more agitated as you stared out into space, thinking of how annoying Akutagawa was.
You sighed, listening to the water running in the nearby shower- Gin took very long showers compared to both you and Akutagawa, which was rather surprising. You would've thought Gin to be a cold-blooded, non-caring assassin. But it did make sense.
After all, most girls did care about their appearances- you were one of them. However, because of your military background, raising, and what you now did for a living, you didn't worry about how you looked anymore. To you, looks were nothing more than a shell to something much deeper, much more intimate.
Looks were a way for people to hide their pain and sadness. Even you used your body to hide your pain, your anger towards life. But there was one thing that you hoped to never do, even if you loved them. And that was to let someone see your insides. You didn't want anyone, even your closest friends, to know who you truly were.
Because they would not like the person that they saw. The true L/n was broken, bruised, manipulated beyond comprehension. The fake L/n was much better on the eyes and the heart. You shook your head, wanting to be rid of the thoughts in your mind.
