I started my trudge towards the mountains and dragged my feet along the sand. A few minutes passed. Nothing. A few more minutes. Nothing. I kept walking and after an hour of useless walking, I decided I'd go to the last city.
From what I remember, the scorch is in New Mexico and the last city is in Denver. I groaned as I realized how far I had to walk.
"Hey! Who are you?" I turned around and saw a group of girls coming my way.
"I'm Amelia and I'm trying to get to Denver." I ran to them and all of the girls from Group B were standing in a circle.
"Sonya."
"I'm know who you are." I said quickly. "I used to work for WICKED, but I escaped.
"So, you know things that we don't?" The girl I remember as Harriet asked.
"Yea, but there's too much to explain." I said. "Have you seen a group of about ten guys anywhere?"
"Yes, actually. They're about ten miles back there." She pointed behind her.
"I've already been through there!" I groaned again.
"We can walk with you, show you where they were." Harriet offered.
"No, it's fine, you have to get to the safe haven." I shook my head and made my way back where I started.
I started getting discouraged on ever finding the guys and it was getting dark, so I went into a shack. I plopped on the floor and sighed.
The door flew open and I pulled out my gun. "Who the hell are you and what do you want?" I hid behind a chair and held the gun up.
"We're trying to find the mo-"
"Newt!" I threw my gun down and ran and jumped into his arms.
"Amelia, I thought I lost you." He placed a kiss on my neck before I pulled away.
"Newt, I'm sorry, I'm so sorry." I started crying again and he gave me a worried look. "I have to run. WICKED will kill me if I come back. I can't stay. We can't be together anymore."
"Amelia, stop it." He laughed nervously. "You'll be fine, they'll have to get past me first."
"That's the thing, Newt." I cried. "I don't want you risking your life for me. Now, when you get to the safe haven, you'll have to fight. Don't do it for me. Do it for your freedom. Do it for all of the people whose lost their lives for you to get to this point."
"But, Amelia, I wanna marry you." He grabbed both of my hands. "I wanna have kids with you. I wanna settle down and grow old with you. I wanna die when I'm 110 years old, in your arms. I don't want 48 uninterrupted hours. I want a lifetime."
"I'm sorry." I hugged him one last time and went out the door.
"Amelia?" I turned my head and Minho had a goofy grin plastered on his face. "Well I'll be shucked."
"Goodbye Minho." I smiled through my tears and went towards the mountains.
I heard commotion and I knew what was up. They were fighting for their lives. I hid under a chamber in the mountains and cried. I heard WICKED helicopters fly in and leave.
"Hey! Is anyone in here?" A familiar face looked right at me. "We have someone!"
"Gally, I promise I was gonna come back, but I changed my mind." I panicked.
"Don't worry, I'm here to save you." He held out his hand for me to grab. "I'm with the Right Arm. We're against WICKED and we're here to help you."
"Gally, you shucking killed Chuck!" I screamed. "How am I suppose to believe you?"
"I was being controlled." He said. "You should know what that's like out of all people."
"Gally, I'm trusting you." I grabbed his hand and he pulled me out of the chamber. "How'd you get out?"
"Hans, here helped me out. WICKED wants him dead, too."
"Well, what are we waiting on?" I looked between the two guys. "Let's blow this popsicle stand."
We got to Denver and went through a weird system to get in. The guards warned me about WICKED when they saw that I was immune to the flare. We walked down the streets and we saw so many normal people who was enjoying themselves. I can't wait to start a new life here.
"Do you want to drink your first drink of coffee?" Gally asked.
"I don't know what that is, but okay!" I went faster with a skip in my step.
"What happened to your finger?" Gally grabbed my hand and brought it close to him, examining the stub.
"A crank got ahold of me." I shrugged.
"We can take you to a doctor." He suggested.
"No, it's fine." I smiled and looked down. "Gally, why are you all of a sudden nice to me?"
"What do you mean?"
"Well, you were such a dickhead in the maze, but now you're being so sweet."
"I guess after what happened, I realized that there's more important things than me."
"I like that." I smiled and we walked into this place called Starbucks.
"Just ask for a dark roast." He nudged me towards the counter and I realized that this was the first time I ever talked to someone who wasn't associated with WICKED.
"Can I have a dark roast?"
"Coming right up, name?" I turned to Gally, seeing if I should use my real name. He shook his head, so I said a fake name.
"Edith."
We went to the back of the shop and sat in a booth, waiting for my drink. When it came, I put it to my mouth and threw my head back.
"Wait!" Gally was too late. The burning liquid already scorched my tongue and throat. "It's. Hot."
"I get that." I harshly wispered. "It hurts."
After we got done at Starbucks, Gally and I went to his apartment.
