Day 29: A Song from Your Childhood
"A Night to Remember" by the High School Musical 3 cast
It's gonna be a night to remember
It's gonna be the night to last forever“Tonight’s the night!” Angel squeals as soon as I open the door. “It’s the only time I get to see you in a dress!” Angel brushes past me with Dani right behind her, both of them laden with garment bags, makeup bags, shoes, and anything and everything else it takes to make a girl look spectacular on prom night.
“Welcome to you too,” I tell her as I close the door behind them. Turning around, I already see that they’re halfway up the stairs. I follow them up, felling to Mom that Angel and Dani are here. Getting to my room, I see that my two best friends have already made themselves at home. Just a minute before my room was somewhat neat but now it’s strewn with so much girly stuff.
Too much if you ask me.
“I’m going to have to make up with all this girlyness by throwing my smelly sock s all over the place,” I mutter.
“Oh, hush. You said you weren’t going to complain,” Angel chides me.
“I’m not a big fan of dressing up but even I am excited,” Dani pipes up. “Try to at least act like we’re no torturing you.”
I make a face and then sigh. “Fine.”
Angel claps her hands. “Yay! Now, why don’t we start on hair? Parker, sit your butt down.” She points to my desk chair, which it down moved in front of my dresser mirror.
Knowing I don’t have a choice, I sit down with no objections and let Angel mess with my hair. Fifteen minutes later my hair is in a fancy braid down my back. I get up and Dani fills the seat now. Angel puts her hair in a messy, but elegant, bun with copper colored tendrils framing her face. Finally, it’s Angel’s turn and she gets a pretty half-up, half-down style that makes her resemble her namesake.
I lounge around on my bed as they’re finishing up their hair and beginning to do their makeup. I flip through a magazine as they work on themselves, hoping they’ll forget about me and not put any of the wretched stuff on my face.
“Parker…” Angel says with a teasing tone.
I groan and put my face in my hands. “Please, no makeup,” I plead.
“It’ll be just a little, not too much. I’ll only put on a little bit of the basics on you. Eye makeup and lip gloss, that’s all.”
I sigh. “I’m going to be losing every battle tonight, aren’t I?” I ask as I lift my head to look at Angel and Dani.
“Pretty much, so suck it up. Now, get over here so I make you look pretty!”
“Aren’t all girls pretty in their own way?” I ask as I slowly sit up and get off my bed.
“If you’re going to play like that, let me rephrase that,” Angel says. “Get your butt over here so I can emphasize your beauty. Better?”
I smile. “Yup.” I sit down in the torture chair.
Angel does a very unladylike snort and shakes her head. “You’re impossible,” she mutters while putting eyeliner on me.
“Why thank you,” I reply somewhat cheekily after she pulls away.
Wouldn’t want to get stabbed in the eye for saying something wrong.
Angel rolls her eyes before putting eye shadow and then mascara on me. To finish up with my makeup, she applies lip gloss to my lips, which is the least of the makeup that I don’t mind. Stepping back, she looks over my face before nodding her approval.
“Good. Now, the fun part!” Angel grins and walks over to the garment bags hanging on the hook attached to my door.
Truthfully, I’m a little nervous. I let Angel pick out my dress and all I had the say in was the color. (But even then that was narrowed down to only a few select choices.)
She unzips the first bag and pulls out a grey and silver dress before handing it to Dani, who takes it and heads to the bathroom across the hall to change. Angel unzips the next bag and pulls out a dark blue dress before turning it around and handing it to me. “I hope it fits. Your mom gave us your measurements and told us what style you might like.”
Looking over the dress, I see it doesn’t have a lot of embellishments or bling. It’s simple, but still elegant at the same time. I look up at Angel and smile. “I love it. Thank you.” I walk to my private bathroom and change in there. The only trouble I have is zipping it up. Holding the top of the dress to my chest with one hand and opening the door with the other I walk back into my room. “Can someone zip me up?” I ask. I see Dani zipping up Angel and after promptly doing so she comes over to me and zips up my gown.
“Well,” Angel says, “all there’s left are accessories, shoes, and purses.”
“Dear gosh can this night be over already?” I groan.
Angel points an accusing finger at me and I see Dani hiding a grin behind her hand. “If I hear one more objection to this dance I will tie you down and go all out on the makeup,” Angel threatens.
I try to keep in my laughter, really, I do, but it bubbles out of me before I can stop it.
“Oh hush,” Angel says crossly, but I can see her lips twitch. “Okay, Parker, here are your accessories and shoes.” Angel thrusts into my hands a pair of high heels that thankfully aren’t I’ll-break-my-neck-if-I-wear-them high, a bracelet, a pair of earrings, and a ring.
I put them and wait for Angel and Dani to finish up with their outfits. Angel hands me a black clutch and I stash my phone, some cash, and the tube of lip gloss (that’d be Angel’s doing, not mine) into it before snapping it shut. Finally, all three of us are ready to walk downstairs and wait for our dates.
One by one we walk downstairs, Mom and Dad taking pictures the entire time. Angel, Dani, and I line up in front of the door and grin for pictures. Dad compliments us on how beautiful we look. Angel wears a baby pink halter dress with a beaded belt. Dani has on a silver gown with a grey skirt and a jeweled bodice. Lastly, I have on an ocean blue one-shouldered dress with a thin beaded belt.
After all that primping and prepping, I can tell you that yes, we all looked beautiful for the night we were never going to forget.
