Chapter 1:Intro, I guess

Eleanor and Hazel are in the middle of moving from their uptown lives in a northern city to a new frontier., after a whole mess of events are now forcing them to. They pack as much as they can into a wagon and start on the Ruvel Ruby trail. They're looking for a small yet sophisticated town known as Tosndel. However, a sand storm forces them to take quick shelter under what looks to be a deserted barn. The map is quickly snatched by the wind. They decide to rest until the sun is down or at least setting. They take the time to get their bearings, and talk about how peaceful yet uneventful life is out in the frontier.

When the storm passes they venture a little deeper and find a town by the name of Erpiari They immediately walk in to ask for directions. Nobody is really paying mind to them as they walk through the streets, or maybe nobody in their right mind is outside with the heat. As the sun begins to slowly reach the horizon, people are starting to venture out though. They pass by many people, coming across a bunch of odd people, like a dark skinned woman yelling nonsense of how they're white, or a blonde man(?) trying to sell them suspicious wares.

They finally come across a lady with a high ponytail, working on a small patch of a garden that seems impossible in the climate. It turns out that her name is Marilyn Liphe and that she's the Co-Sheriff (she doesn't like the word Deputy) around these parts, and will gladly show them to an audience with the mayor. The girls are surprised at a girl police officer, and are questioning her excitedly on their way to the Mayor's office. They notice how she doesn't seem to carry a gun, but a sheath on her belt. They think it's a sword and simply don't mention it.

As they enter the legal building, they are unenthusiastically greeted by a male receptionist, who seems to have someone on hold. The Co-Sheriff scolds him for slacking, and the male receptionist( found to be named Harold) replies with a snarky remark and glares at her. Liphe signals that she's watching him, then walks past with girls in tow.  As soon as they pass him, he immediately goes back to almost shouting at the phone. They dismiss it as gossip, and go to knock on the Mayor's door. Muffled yelling can also be heard through the door, as the Mayor is also arguing with someone over the line. The Co-Sheriff's knocks bring him out of it, as he hangs up and tells them to enter. Marilyn bows respectfully to him, then introduces the duo, as they glance around at how surprisingly well kept, yet disorganized the room for a high political figure is. The Mayor introduces himself as Mayor Matthew Hutchins , and asks if he can do anything to welcome the girls to the town. The girls shake their heads, saying they only came to ask for directions to Tosndel. The Mayor stares at them funny. He looks to the Co-Deputy, who only shrugs. The girls are wondering what the big deal is. Confused, the Mayor replies with "What's Tosndel?"

This leaves the girls aghast. What does the Mayor mean "What's Tosndel?" It's their neighbouring town on the East Side of course! But the Mayor simply shakes his head, and says that no town named Tosndel had ever existed near them, and the map they had gotten off that street merchant was most likely scamming them and leading them to a trap. He does offer them a place of residence at the local inn though, and says all expenses would be paid until they either left or found jobs. The girls look at each other, then sigh and thank the Mayor for his hospitality.
