The door let at a creak and jingle as you opened it, notifying the waiter who was already making her way towards you. With a quick wave of dismiss and a finger pointed elsewhere (presumably to where he was sitting), the waiter gave you a nod in understanding- understanding that you were meeting somebody here- and left you be.
The warm smell of coffee beans met your nose and directed it towards where the freshly baked pastries sat behind the glass display. You were tempted to march up to the counter and order a dozen of your favourite goodies- crunchy cannoli shells- but refrained from doing so. You were here to meet with your brother, not to go off stuffing your face (Although, you would rather be doing that).
Gripping the handles of the pram tightly, you breathed in deeply before letting it all out. Out with all the worries. All the anxiety. All the everything that was holding you down.
This was your brother. Not satan- close, but not the devil himself.
And besides, you absolutely adored your brother- back when he was still living with you, of course.
After he left, you distanced yourself from everybody. Your parents, your friends- Ino and Sakura-, you started hanging out with the wrong crowd. Did you blame him for your change in personality? Absolutely not. You missed him. He was the person you looked up to and you shaped yourself to be just like him- well, you tried to.
Him leaving, felt like a betrayal.
You were only thirteen at the time, you didn't understand that he was twenty-four and in need of getting away from your parents. He had a girlfriend too, they moved in, did their thing. He was going to have to live his life at some point. Not be his sister's best friend forever. You could never blame him for doing that.
At the time, you were just confused.
So when you left primary school and started high school, you vowed to become something else; something far from your brother.
Now looking back on it, you could see how much trouble that got you in.
Eyeing Tadao sleeping soundly in his pram, you couldn't find yourself regretting it.
Scanning over the tabletops, you tried finding where he was sitting. The cafe was rather busy, with people occupying almost every chair. Manoeuvring the pram and yourself further into the place, you found a mop of roughly chopped brown hair in the midst of all the other heads.
He grew his hair out.
With a final push, you made it to his table. His back was to you, slightly hunched and looking over his shoulder you could see a cup cradled between his hands. Every second, his pinky would tap against the cup, as if counting the time. And if on cue, he turned his wrist over to check his watch.
You parked the pram next to him. ''I'm not that late, am I?''
His shoulders jumped. Turning his head, he saw you struggling to take a chair out from another table. Standing up, and bumping his knee in the process, he turned to hug you. You hugged back, slightly surprised at the gesture. His arms didn't even circle properly around you before his attention was taken away by Tadao.
''Hey buddy,'' he coed, hands reaching out to take Tadao from his pram.
''He's sleeping-'' you started, but the words died down in your throat once you saw it was already too late.
Tadao's eyes squinted against the warm light of the cafe, and his nose scrunched up once he smelled the strong scent of coffee and cigarettes. He found himself curled up in the arms of a strange man, the scuff of his stubble scratching against his cheek. He was about to start screeching- seeing as he woke up in a strange place, held by a stranger that smelled strange- but relaxed upon hearing your voice,
