Today we've got SicSemperT-Rex with us as this issue's Starring Role—ahem, Spotlight Author. So, Agent Mothertrooper, if you had to describe yourself in one word, what words wouldn't you use?
simple, satisfied
When you were a young 'un, what did you want to be when you grew up?
Egyptologist
What's your favourite quote?
"If everybody is thinking alike, then somebody isn't thinking." - General George S. Patton
Tell us about your reading/writing habits. If you're not a writer, then simply the former will suffice!
I have really broad tastes in both reading and writing. My top three genres, in no particular order, are science fiction, fantasy, and historical fiction, and I've written in all three of those genres. I've written in a broad variety of genres, but right now, I mostly write steampunks and alternate histories. Most of my stories have a fantasy twist to them, as well.
As your crew casts your lifeless body into the heart of the nearest star, list three pieces of music likely to be rattling the bulkheads of your beloved vessel!
"Amazing Grace" - Dropkick Murphys version ; "You'll Never Walk Alone" - Dropkick Murphys version ; "An Eala Bhan" - Julie Fowlis or Manran versions are acceptable
Who is your all-time favourite author? How much, if at all, has their work influenced your writing style?
Brandon Sanderson, hands down. I think he really influenced me, especially with his "Mistborn" series.
Of everything you've written, which piece is your favourite?
Depends on the day. Today, I think it's my new piece, "Shangri-La"
Pitch the above story to us. Make us really want to read it!
Evil emperors, cocky fighter pilots, snarky thieves, backstabbing wives, all set in a cyberpunk-ed, dystopic version of China. What more could you ask for?
To what extent does the mythical 'real life' influence your writing?
Honestly? No idea. I get influenced by history a lot, so I guess some.
If you could have any superpower, what would that be and why?
Teleportation: my life would be so much easier if I could teleport everywhere...
What would you do if you woke up to discover you were Superman?
Quit my day job, save some people, rake in royalty checks from people making stuff about me.
The Technological Singularity presents a rather daunting, some say inevitable, future. Does the prospect of that level of artificial intelligence excite you, or leave you quaking in your space boots?
I think I've seen "Battlestar: Galactica" and "Bladerunner" too many times to think it's a good idea...
Who was your first Sci-Fi crush? Who is your current one?
Definitely Apollo from the reboot of "Battlestar: Galactica" for my first one. I don't know if I can really pick one, now: there's a lot...
If you could experience the world of any Sci-Fi story on Wattpad, which would that be and why?
"City in the Air" - I just really loved that book.
And finally, any words of wisdom to new and aspiring Sci-Fi writers?
Never not write something because you don't think people will read it! I tried to write what was popular, once, and I hated every second of it. If you write what you're passionate about, it'll come through in your writing, and it'll be all the better for it.
Thanks for the interview, Agent Mothertrooper! Now you're ready for the next phase of the mission...
