"Roxy, are you even listening to me?" Bruce asks me impatiently.
I look at him and furrow my eyebrows. "No." I admit.
He sighs. "Well pay attention."
"We're supposed to be going through this fan mail." I point out.
"While listening to me."
"It's one or the other, Bruce. You know I don't pay attention well."
He sighs. "What day is it, Roxanne?"
I narrow my eyes and purse my lips.
Roxanne.
I've never liked that damn name. I'm not a grandma.
Not yet...anyways.
"It's Saturday."
"Right." He says, speaking to me like I'm a child. Carter snorts and I glare daggers at him. "What is the date, Roxanne?"
"Don't you have a watch?" I snap. "Stop calling me that. I'm thirty five. Not eighty."
"Your thirty five." He says, tapping his chin. "Surly a thirty five year old woman who has been married for fourteen years and has four children can pay attention?"
Emma laughs and my eyes snap onto hers.
"Sorry Mom." She clears her throat and goes back to her homework.
"Surly a guy who has a lot of money and a nice life can stop being a jackass." I reply.
Bruce has known me since before I was a thought. He's my second father. He's been here my whole life.
"Roxanne!" he stands up. "Pay attention."
"Some on Cinnamon." Carter pokes my ribs. "Just for a few minutes."
"I'm hungry!" Matthew speaks up.
"Your eleven." Carter says. "You can wait until we leave."
He huffs and continues working on his homework.
"This is stupid." Justin whispers to Emma and Matthew.
"That's a bad word!" Macy says. "Mommy!"
"Shut up Macy!" Justin says. "Your going to get me in trouble!"
"If you guys start fighting I'm going to lock you in a closet until you've made up." I cut in. "Stop whining. Justin, don't say words like that in front of your sister."
"Don't say them at all." Carter cuts in.
"Why?" he asks. "Mom says them all the time."
"Just don't say the stuff I say, okay?"
He sighs and nods.
"No do your homework and stop arguing."
"Are you done?" Bruce asks.
Rachel smirks at me and I huff, turning my attention on Bruce.
"Okay Roxy, what is the date?"
I reach for my phone but it's not there. I reach into Carter's pocket and grab his.
"It's June third." I reply.
"Right." He says. "On Wednesday, all of your kids get out of school. What happens Wednesday night?"
"We leave for a world tour."
He claps.
He fucking claps.
