"Mom?" Emma comes walking into the kitchen the next morning. It's five fifteen and I'm the only one awake. Well, I was the only one awake. Emma is in white ripped shorts and a light blue tank top and a beige push-up bra. Her hair is straightened and she's wearing vans.
"Hi." I kiss her cheek and take another sit of my coffee.
"Will you buy me a vibrator?"
I spit my coffee involuntarily. Her whole face is beet red.
"What?" I sputter.
"I'll be sixteen in November," she continues. "I just...I want to experience that kind of stuff."
I blink three times.
Oh god, how the fuck do I deal with this?
"Do I need to give you the sex talk?" I ask slowly.
She doesn't answer.
That's a yes.
"I'll do that later." I sigh.
"Can you get me a vibrator? How does it work?"
"Honestly?" I ask. She bobs her head rapidly. "You just turn it on and put it where it feels best."
She nods. "Okay. Will you get me one?"
"I don't know." I say. "You'll have to wait."
"Okay. What about the shower?"
"What about the shower?" Carter walks into the kitchen.
He looks at Emma's red face and wide eyes, and then he looks at me.
"I'm going to pretend I didn't hear that." He turns around and walks off.
"This is so embarrassing!" Emma runs away crying and her empty bedroom door slams.
Carter goes outside and I sit in the kitchen, alone.
Macy comes downstairs in two different sizes and colored socks. Her hair is wild and a hairbrush is in her hand and she has a dress on and her head is in the arm hole.
"Mommy, I need help." She whines. Justin and Matthew come in, fully dressed.
"Morning. Where's Daddy?" Justin asks.
"Morning." I yawn. "He's outside." I reply.
They nod and I pull of Macy's pink dress and fix it, and then I brush her hair and put it in pony tail braids. The boys disappear outside and I get Macy matching socks and look at the time. It's six.
"We need to leave!" Carter yells from downstairs. The front door slams before I can reply.
"Emma! Let's go!" I call. I check for last minute things and then I usher the kids outside and I lock the house and leave the key on the mat where I told the real estate agent it would be.
Emma doesn't look at Carter and he doesn't look at her, or me. He buckles Macy in and I get in the drivers seat, Emma in the passenger. He's driving the u-haul.
I buckle and Carter runs off to the truck before I can say I love you.
I roll my eyes.
Carter drives off and I start the car and follow him.
