The weeks leading up to the musical were stress-filled. I was still an almost nervous wreck on most nights after the anonymous message and the fact that I had to act like my sister that hadn't been seen for many years.
The only reason I didn't break down was because I knew that everyone needed me. Gerald's plan would not be played out.
"Alex, you ready for your first performance." I set my jaw and nod. The first few notes of the opening number are amplified by the backstage crew and I make my way onstage. The lights are bright and the people looking from the audience sets me on edge but I manage to start on the right note and time.
The rest of the musical goes smooth enough and the next 2 musicals after that. Ten minutes before the musical started on my last performance, my phone vibrates. I quickly look at the message before I start shaking. I can't tear my eyes away from the message.
I don't understand why I should ruin your big night. So let's set up the crowd for a big encore surprise.
I grit my teeth and slam my phone on the floor.
"Alex, are you okay?" Dix's voice wafts from the changing room next to mine and I take a deep breath.
"It's happening tonight. After the performance, go straight into the crowd and get everyone out of the hall. I don't care what any of the teachers say, just get everyone out. Get Jordan, Bear, Dec, Kaiden and Aven to help you. Get everyone possible to help. Just get everyone out of this hall."
"Why? Alex, what's going on?" Dix's voice sounds so concerned but I don't want to scare her any more.
"It's nothing. Just do as I said okay?" I walk out of the changing room, Dix right behind me. I feel her hand on my shoulder and turn swiftly.
"Alex, I'm here to help you. Jordan, Bear, Dec and I are here. And Kaiden. He's always going to be there for you." I soften for a second before I tense up again.
"I know that. But I can't have you and the others in the line of fire. I need to do this by myself." I leave Dix in the changing rooms and get ready to go onstage.
This fight would end tonight.
