For the fifth time this week, they're fighting again. I hate it when they do, who wants their parents fighting?
Ever since Marvin died there wasn't a time that they didn't fight. Marvin is my best friend, boy best friend, partner in crimes, and my twin brother. He died in a car crash three years ago, where I also lost the sight of my right eye.
My name is Maxine Turner, seventeen years old. And I'm here sitting in front of the window watching the beautiful art of the eclipse. As the cold went blue gently, the broken old music box that I found last weekend in grandma's house caught my eye. I took it and examined it again. Rusts began covering the pink glittery metal box. Actually, it wasn't really a literal box; it's more like a cylinder which is a little bit bigger than my hand.
All of a sudden, I jumped on my seat as it opened. A beautiful pinkish tree with butterflies flying above it was inside. Soft calming music started playing as the tree also started spinning slowly.
As I listened to the music I felt happiness and contentment. It feels like I'm somewhere safe. I didn't even realize how long I had been so engulfed with the music. As it ended, the music box closed by itself.
I close my eyes and take a deep breath. Thinking about the music, I slowly open my eyes. To my surprise, I found myself not in my room but in a grassy field filled with flowers and colorful butterflies. The beautiful pink tree that was in the music box was a few feet away from me. I heard bees buzzing and birds chirping. The breeze was calming and it seemed like someone was playing a lyre.
"What is this place?" I asked myself.
The sun was covered by thick fluffy white clouds. I looked at the music box in my hand but it was gone. What I saw was a dark pink sapphire necklace.
Then suddenly, everything around me became lifeless. The flowers and grasses became dried; birds, butterflies, and the bees disappeared. Seconds later, a girl and a boy around my age came running in my direction.
"HIDE!" they shouted.
"Huh?" I responded with confusion.
As they approached me, the boy dragged me with them and pulled me behind a large stone.
"What's happening?" I asked.
"Shhh... be quiet if you want to be alive", the girl whispered.
"What!? Stop joking around", I frowned.
"Just stop talking! Okay?" the boy argued in a whisper.
Even though I can't seem to wrap my fingers around about what they meant by those words, I listened to them.
Are they playing tricks or - wait... they wear differently. I thought to myself.
The boy was wearing dark green trousers, dark green blaze and brown boots. His eyes were different too, the color of his right eye is gray and the other one is hazel brown.
In his right cheek is a maple leaf tattoo. The girl too was different; she wore flat lace-up sandals, dark green leggings topped with a brown short skirt and a dark green tube topped with a brown blazer. Just like the boy, her eyes were gray and hazel brown and she had a maple leaf tattoo on her right cheek.
Seconds later, three winged ladies passed by. They were like fairies or should I say, they were really fairies. They were carrying blooded swords and they looked really angry. When the fairies were out of sight the two let out a sigh of relief.
"Thank god" the girl muttered.
"This is your entire fault," the boy told the girl.
"So now it's my fault?" the girl replied, crossing her arms and raising an eyebrow.
"What are those? Are those fairies?" I interrupted them.
The two looked at me from head to toe with a confused look.
"Wait ... Where are you from?" the girl asked confusingly.
"The question is what you are?" the boy curled his forehead.
"Huh? Seriously?" I replied awkwardly.
"Where are you from?"... "What are you?" They both repeated.
"Ummh... I'm from San Francisco, California? And I'm obviously a human" I answered with hesitation.
Are these two crazy or what? Are they playing some kind of a joke at me? I thought to myself.
"San Fran--where exactly?" the boy asked in confusion.
The girl and the boy exchange confused glances. I also just stared at them.
"Ohhhh.. okay. Looks like I'm in a dream or something, that music from the music box should've sent me to sleep", I realized.
The two looked at each other.
"Did you just say music box?" the boy asked curiously.
I nodded. "You heard me well".
"Is there a necklace or something with pink Sapphire?" the girl asked.
"You mean this?" I asked as I held the necklace in the air.
The two smiled widely.
"I'm Nova and this is my younger brother, Nico," the girl said.
"Come with us before they catch you," the boy named Nico said.
"What?" I asked again confusingly. "Catch me?"
"Oh sorry, of course you don't understand. Come on, while we walk we'll talk" Nova replied with a smile.
I put the necklace on and followed them.
