"Kristen, hurry up we're going to be late for our flight" Micaela yelled down from the living room.
Micaela Faller is my bestfriend. We've known each other since we were in diapers. My mom and her parents are really good friends as well, they've all went to high school together. We moved in next door to them here in San Diego after my parents separated when I was only two months old. Don't ask me why they decided to split, all my mom ever told me was that the word "us" was not in their vocabulary while they were together. Her reason was always a travesty to me, but that didn't matter.
"I'll be down, just give me a minute" I screamed from my bedroom. I was in my almost empty room, slighlty reminiscing of the fond memories I had. As I made my way to the mirror, I took a good look at myself and notice a picture sticking out behind the side of the mirror. I pulled it out gently and carefully held it in my hand. It was a picture of my dad holding me as a baby in the hospital on the day of my birth. A tear softly fell from my eyes as I gazed at the picture.
"Kristen, if we seriously don't leave now, the plane will leave us!" Micaela yelled again in a irritated yet excited tone.
"I'm coming, I'm coming!" I yelled back. "Yes Dad, I'm coming" I whispered to myself as I wiped the tears from my eyes as I grabbed my carryon bag, placing the picture in there and went down the stairs. "Ok, I'm ready. Let's go" I say as I nudge Micaela who was waiting by the door.
"Took you long enough" Micaela said as we made our way out the door and into the car where our parents waited for us.
"Bye Kristen and Micaela!" my brothers Chris and Brandon yelled from the house as we drove off to the airport.
Micaela and I are headed off to college. We both got accepeted to the University of Hawaii at Manoa. And ever since I was a little girl, I've always dreamed of going to school there. I was born in Kauai, Hawaii and I've only stayed there for less than two months after my birth, so coming back there is sort of a huge deal for me. Living in Hawaii was a dream of mine. And the fact that there is a huge surfing scene in Hawaii makes it even better. I grew up with a love for surfing. Surfing is a part of my being, it's my life. I started surfing at the age of four but I didn't take it that seriously until I turned thirteen. But surfing, my birthplace, and the island life was not the main reason why I wanted to go to Hawaii. It was the fact that it is where the father I never knew or had, lived.
As we arrived at the airport, Micaela's dad unloaded our luggaged from the car. The rest of our stuff was already shipped to our dorm about a week ago. We said our final good-byes. I hugged my mom tight and she did the same as she whispered in my ear, "Don't expect too much ok sweety. I don't want you to get your hopes up and end up hurt".
"I won't mom, I know what I'm doing" I whispered back to her and gave her a kiss on the cheek.
"You ready girl?" Micaela asked as she finished saying good bye to her Mom and Dad.
"Yea, I'm ready. Let's go." I say with a big smile and made our way inside. I turned to look at our parents one last time and waved goodbye.
As we waited to board our plane, I couldn't help but think of what's to come in Hawaii. A mix of emotions came over me. Micaela noticed this and before she could say anything, It was time to board. We finally got to our seats and as we took off I looked out the window and smiled to myself. "Here's to a new chapter" I said to Micaela and put in my headphones zoning out everything around me.
*Sorry for the short chapter. It's my first story, so I hope you like this chapter. I'll update very soon. Promise!* -Reeeshell
