"So..." Callisto said quietly, almost whispered, after an hour worth of writing without saying a word to each other.
Remus looked up at her, not lifting his head or his quill from his previous position. "We don't have to just write the essays as fast as we can and then gather up and go... right?"
"...What are you implying to?" he mumbled with his eyebrows raised.
"The fact that we could take a little break, and still get them finished on time?"
Remus looked down at his work, and sighed before placing the quill to the side, and leaning back into the chair. Callisto couldn't help but notice his Prefect badge and the visible scratches all over his face and neck. She stayed quiet, waiting for him to say something, but it was more than obvious of how uncomfortable he was.
"So, tell me something about yourself."
"My name is Remus John Lupin." Is all he said. Literally. She was at loss of words again, not sure what to reply to that. He has probably noticed how taken aback she was by his answer, because moments later he had decided to say something else. "...I'm socially awkward, I'm sorry." He looked the other way, his neck and cheeks turning the deepest and most obvious shade of red, while he scratched the back of his neck.
"No! No- It's uh,- It's fine. I'm sorry. We could, uh- we could continue working, I guess." Callisto grabbed the quill again, but surprisingly he grabbed a hold of her wrist before she continued on writing.
"No, let's take a break. You are right." She looked up at him, and for the first time he was looking back at her. He let go of Callisto's wrist and she slowly put the quill down. After a while, he opened his mouth to speak. "Callisto... Do you know what Callisto means?" he smirked.
"Not quite..."
"Callisto, was a nymph... And the meaning of her name was Most beautiful..." he smiled, and then his smile quickly disappeared when he looked down at his hands. "It is also a moon..." he looked outside the long window, and into the bright crescent moon. "It's actually the third-largest moon in the Solar System."
"Wow." Callisto smiled at him, in disbelief. "How do you know all of this? And for such an unusual name like mine too!"
"Just read it somewhere, I guess..." He ran a hand through his hair and looked away from the moon.
"You're a Prefect." She nodded at his badge, and he looked down at it, adjusting it on the way.
"Ah, yes. Really nothing special... I don't fancy taking points away from houses." he chuckled softly. "Sometimes, I even pretend I haven't seen anything, so I don't have to take away any points."
They both has a small quiet laugh, considering the fact that they were still in the library, where they had to keep it down.
-----
"I'm done." Callisto sat back, finally, after a long period of three hours, writing an essay that's not even hers to finish.
"Me too." he put the quill down, letting out a loud sigh. "It's getting late. We cannot be out after curfew."
"Why not?" Her question stunned him.
"Because..." he eased up and leaned in closer. "I'm a Prefect." he smirked. "And as much as I hate taking points away... I will, if I must." he smugly raised an eyebrow at her.
She cocked her head to the side, and frowned. "Alright then, Prefect. Why don't walk me back to my Common Room, and then I'm sure you will find your way back to your dorm safely. I mean... you're after all... a Prefect, right?" A satisfied smug was playing on her lips, as she saw his expression growing surprised at the comeback.
"Alright then." he tried to hide a smile. "After you."
They both stood up and shortly after left the library.
-----
"Hey, can I ask a question? A bit personal... you don't have to answer." Callisto bit her lip, as the two of them slowly made their way to the Slytherin Common Room.
"Ask away?"
"How did you get the..." She circled her face with her index finger. "You know... the scratches?"
"Oh. Um... Uh-" He looked down at his feet. "I fell."
"You... fell? And you got your face all messed up with scratches?" Something was up, she could feel it. "What did you fall on?"
"Haha, see it's funny because- umm... I, uh- tripped and fell really close to the Whomping Willow. It really messed me up didn't it?" he chuckled.
"What were you even doing near that thing?" I stare at him, the story definitely not adding up.
"I was just tired of going around it, so I decided I could walk past it faster if I sprint."
"When exactly did this happen? Your scratches seem fresh."
"Oh, literally just two days ago, the afternoon."
"That is funny, because, in fact, I have been studying nearby that whole afternoon and I saw nothing strange going on." she raised an eyebrow. Of course she hasn't been there. She was just trying to catch him lying. It was too obvious.
"Really?! Haha. You must have been very far then, otherwise you would have seen the tree going wild."
"Umm, no. I was pretty close actually. On safe distance, but close. And I literally have not seen anything." he had kept quiet, now sweating profusely. Her hand landed on his shoulder and they both stopped walking. "Remus?" He looked everywhere but into Callisto's eyes. "...Remus." she repeated and their eyes locked. "Has anyone done anything bad to you?" she asked him softly, and his face went pale.
"Like- like what?" he swallowed hard.
"I don't know... Like, beat you up... or-"
"Yeah. I- someone beat me up. Sorry I lied. Some guys found me alone one day and beat me up."
"Who?" she asked, confused and alarmed.
"Nobody. Nobody important, really. Some lame bullies." He seemed so relieved, though. Like he had got away with something.
Callisto decided not to push him any further about it, but she was for sure going to find out.
