Part 1
Paxton
After lunch, I threw my backpack in my locker and headed for gym. I was excited yet purely terrified about this afternoon. Today, I was taking my mate out for milkshakes for the first time.
I couldn't wait to tell Kieran about all of this. Kieran was my best friend and soon to be Beta. He was the one person I told everything, even the things my own parents don't know.
"Hey, Pax!" Kieran yelled, running up to me. "How's it going, man?"
"I found my mate." I whispered to him excitedly.
"Really? Who is she?" he asked.
"Um, his name is Kayden." I said nervously, not sure how he would react.
"Oh, so it's a guy? Does that even happen?" he asked.\
I breathed a sigh of relief. He wasn't going to ditch me. "Well obviously it does. It happened to me."
"Well, what's he like?" he asked as we entered the locker room.
"I don't really know him that well but he's adorable. He's really shy but once you get to know him he gets kind of sarcastic. He doesn't have any friends, though which upsets me." I said, furrowing my brow.
"Why doesn't he have any friends?" Kieran asked, pulling his shirt off and replacing it with his gym uniform.
"He's been progressively mute for years so people don't talk to him. I feel bad for him because he's a great person but no one takes the time to try and talk to him." I said sadly as we walked into the gymnasium.
"Well, introduce me to him at lunch tomorrow. I'll sit with you guys. I need to get to know the mate of my best friend." he smiled.
I returned the smile, relieved at how telling him turned out. I don't know what I would do if he reacted badly.
"Paxton Knight and Kieran Roberts," I looked over to see Principal McGullen waving us over. I exchanged looks with Kieran before walking over.
"Is there something wrong?" I asked.
"Yes. Kieran, your father is here to pick you two up. Some family emergency." the principal said.
Kieran and I looked at each other with nervous glances before following Mr. McGullen to the office. The only reason we would get pulled out of school is if something serious happened at the pack grounds. Since we were to become Alpha and Beta when we turned 18, because our fathers were Alpha and Beta, we were taken out of school when something serios happened so we could learn how to deal with it on our own in the future.
After we got into Carson, Kieran's father's car, he explained the situation. "There was a rogue attack. Mary and Ryan Pierce were killed."
"Wait." I respond. "Didn't Mary and Ryan have a son? Connor, right?" I asked.
"Yes. We haven't found him, but we are almost certain he has yet to decease." Carson replied.
The rest of the ten minute drive home seemed so much longer. I knew Connor Pierce, not personally but he was such a sweet little kid, much like his parents. Mary and Ryan were pack healers. Ryan was a battlefield medic while Mary worked in the pack infirmary. I wasn't close to them but I do care for every person in my pack and I knew the couple would be a great loss. I also hoped Connor was okay. Seven was too young to die. He was not even old enough to shift yet.
When Carson put the car in park, I immediately jumped out and ran to the Pierce residence. I needed to know if Connor was okay.
"Dad!" I yelled as he came into view in front of my destination. "Has anyone found Connor yet?"
He turned to me. "No. Why don't you go search the house. I have already sent a couple of men to investigate the property. I'll talk to you more after we find him."
I nodded and entered the house. It looked so normal. It pained me to think the happy family living in this house was decimated. I shouted Connor's name, trying to avoid looking at the pictures around the house, knowing I would start crying if I looked at them.
"Connor?" I yelled as I continued ascending the stairs to the second floor. "Connor, if you're here, please come out. It's Paxton, Alpha Knight's son. I promise I won't hurt you."
I heard whimpering so I followed the sound to a room at the end of the hall.
"Connor?" I said as I entered what looked like Mary and Ryan's bedroom.
The whimpering seemed to be coming from the closet in the back corner of the room so I went over and opened it.
Sitting there, half hidden by clothes was a blond haired, hazel eyed boy, Connor Pierce.
"Hey, Connor. Do you know who I am?" I asked gently, crouching down to talk to him. He nodded. "Alright, good. I'm here to come get you. It's safe for you to come out now." I said, holding my arms out to him.
He nodded and crawled out before standing and walking into my arms. He hugged my neck tightly and I felt him shaking.
"Where's mommy and daddy?" he asked quietly into my shoulder.
"They, uh, they didn't make it. I'm sorry." I told him, wrapping my arms around him tighter. I hated that I had to tell him but he would've figured out soon enough.
He sobbed into my shirt roughly, painfully.
"I'm so sorry, Connor. So sorry." I held his sobbing, shaking bodyclose to mine for a couple seconds. "Alright. We have to go let the rest of the pack know you're alive so I'm gonna carry you outside." I said, lifting him and carrying him out of the room.
"Don't leave me," I heard him sob quietly into my shoulder between cries.
"Don't worry. I'm not gonna leave you. I promise." I said back.
I walked out of the house and over to my dad.
"Dad, I found him."
