Kayden (1 year later)
As I sat outside, watching my son play with his best friend, holding my four month old daughter Aria, I figured life couldn't get much better than this.
This past year has been the best year of my life. I was able to reconnect with my biological parents and little sister. I got closer to Addy and Gavin. They even got along well with my bio parents. Paxton graduated high school. I went through senior year and graduated. Paxton and I adopted another child, our daughter, Aria. And last but not least, Paxton proposed to me and, of course, I said yes.
I looked down at the dark silver ring on my finger and smiled.
Paxton proposed to me on my 17th birthday, December 17th. We had brought Connor with us to our spot for a picnic. Of course, both of them knew about the proposal while I was in the dark. We ate and joked and laughed until Paxton told me to close my eyes. I questioned him, of course, but eventually shut them. He sat a laptop in my lap and played a video.
The video consisted of pictures of the three of us and each one had some kind of text. It talked about our past almost year together and how much he loved me and how he wanted to be with me for the rest of my life. By the end of the video I was crying and when I finally looked at my boys again, Connor was smiling, holding a huge poster with the words "Will you marry me?" written in his 8 year old scrawl and Paxton on one knee holding an open rig box.
I was so shocked, so surprised that I couldn't even speak.
Paxton just whispered, "Marry me," and I broke down, trying to speak but all my words came out as garbled sobs. I nodded fiercely and threw myself at him, hugging him.
We spent the rest of the day together and I don't think I had ever been happier.
I was taken from my thought when I felt a hand on my shoulder. I turned to see my beautiful fiancé standing above me.
"Hey, babe," he said, kissing my head. "And hello my baby girl." He said in a baby voice, brushing his hand lightly over Aria's head.
"Hey," I said back as he sat down in a chair beside me.
"What are you doing out here?" He asked.
"Oh, just watching..." I trailed off as I looked into the backyard and saw no trace of the boys. "Where are the boys?" I asked, slightly panicking.
"Calm down, babe. I'm sure their just playing in the woods. They're safe, don't worry." He assured me, scooting closer and putting his hand on my knee.
"Okay," I said, calming down a little. I was still worried, but I knew he was right. The boys played in the woods all the time.
"CONNOR!" I heard the scream moments later. I stiffened immediately and looked at Paxton who had shot out of his chair, staring intently out at the woods.
"Connor! Jacob!" He called out, walking towards the woods. He made it nearly halfway before Jacob, Connor's best friend, sprinted into the yard in tears.
I stood as Paxton ran to Jacob. After a few short words, Paxton was running into the woods, shifting mid stride.
"Paxton!" I yelled after him but he didn't respond before disappearing. I turned to Jacob. "Come here, hun."
He ran up to me and hugged my leg. I put my left hand on his head, holding Aria in my right.
"What happened, baby boy?" I asked gently.
He looked up at me with red watery eyes and a heartbreaking look on his face. "W-We were playing hide and seek and I was hiding in a tree. I saw Connor come looking for me when a man came out of the woods. He... he took Connor, papa. I tried to help but I was too slow! He took him!"
