Mass Rape in DRC

If I tell you: mass rapes with extreme violence, genitals mutilated with blunt or sharp objects, severed breasts, forced pregnancies and forced abortions.

You will probably answer me that these things are impossible, inconceivable, and yet, it is a reality that still unfolds today in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

In North Kivu, a region located in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo and with an immensely rich soil where gold, diamond, oil, gas, tin, copper and coltan, rape is become a weapon of  war used by all parties.

In 1996, in Congo, a rebellion against Mobutu Sese Seko, the dictator of the time, brought Laurent Kabila to power.  Since then, a mercileyss war reigns.

This war is mainly waged by Rwandan and Ugandan militias against the local population which hinders them in their plundering.

In 2011, the figures are horrifying, 1152 rapes per day, 48 rapes every hour.

The rapes are planned, organized, staged. They are a strategy to traumatize families, to destroy communities and to drive people out of the cities so that others can appropriate the country's natural resources.

Despite the horrors and stigmatization of them, women in the Democratic Republic of Congo are not weak.  The atrocities they suffered did not shoot them down, quite the contrary.

Together, the victims support each other and continue to move forward.  Thanks to their perseverance and positivism, they hope that one day the atrocities they have suffered will cease.

(And I hope so too 💗)
