"Shut up over there!" I flinched fearfully and glanced over my shoulder. The boss was still screaming, but not at me. I sighed in relief and got back to my job.
"Shh, it's alright." I whispered to the horse as I led them away from the water. The horse whinnied in defense, trying to turn his head back to the water trough. "No no no, it's time to load up."
The horse huffed in defeat and didn't give me anymore trouble as I led him back to his harness. "Good boy." I whispered into the horse's ear, buckling the harness around him.
Thunder was the only horse who ever gave me any trouble. The other three were already harnessed and ready to go, but Thunder was frustratingly difficult. I'd spent five minutes getting him away from the food, then another ten minutes getting him away from the water. Stubborn horse.
"Could you stop fucking this shit up?" I glanced back over my shoulder. I could see the newest boy in our group struggling to pick up a bunch of dropped firewood. "Fuck it. Dustian!"
I winced and walked over quickly, keeping my head down. He was about to shout again, so I quickly spoke up. "Sir?"
He whirled around angrily, relaxing slightly when he saw me. "Have you finished with the horses?" He really meant Thunder, as I was the only person who could get him to cooperate, but he wouldn't say that out loud. It would give me too much credit.
"All that's left is to check their hooves sir." He nodded in appreciation, gesturing to the wood piles.
"Finish cleaning up this mess, then carry it to Cart 4." I nodded and he grabbed the boy's arm, dragging him towards his personal cart. I shuddered at the thought. He'd get whipped for a few minutes, but then he'd get a choice. He could continue to get whipped until the boss got tired, or he could get on his knees and make up for his failure.
I had plenty of whip marks going down my back, and I'd given in to his demands several times. Each time was just as painful and rough as before. I shuddered again and quickly got to work gathering the wood. Better to not end up as the next person bring dragged to his cart.
I hefted the wood onto my shoulder with little effort. Four years of hard work gives you some muscle after all. I carried it to the cart, then sighed in disappointment. I set the wood down and opened the door. These things weren't supposed to be shut. Which means someone didn't do their job right. Again.
It was dark inside, which made me frown. The lanterns were supposed to stay lit while we were standing still. I searched around in the dark for a minute, searching for the lantern. "If I ever get my hands on whoever did this, I'm breaking their toes." I didn't say it to anyone in particular. It was really just my way of letting off some steam.
I stepped further into the cart and then stopped as I felt a shiver run down my spine. Something was in here with me. Call it instinct, call it intuition, I don't care. I knew. I couldn't run. Someone else would just come in. I needed to get the light on. Then I could figure out what to do.
I took another hesitant step and heard a low grumble. A growl. So it's probably a wolf. Great. I saw a flash of something big moving in the dark and I shuddered, stepping closer to it. The growl got louder, but I kept getting closer to it.
The floor creaked under me, and that's when it attacked. It slammed into my chest, knocking me off my feet. Before I could cry out it was on top of me. It was bigger than any wolf I'd ever seen. Each of it's giant paws were almost as big as my head, and it's head was big enough to block my vision. Well, that and how close it was. I could clearly see into it's large, black eyes. They were pure in the sense that there would never be any lies there, that this creature had never tried to hide its feelings.
It growled again, it's razor sharp teeth inches from my face. I took a deep breath to calm myself. "Shh, it's alright. I don't want to hurt you."
The wolf's jaw snapped shut and it whimpered in confusion. I could work with this. "May I please get up? I promise I won't run."
The wolf hesitantly backed off me, cocking it's head sideways curiously. I bit my lip and carefully reached out to it. It started growling again, but stopped when I started petting it.
It started grinning. If wolves could grin at least, then that's what he'd be doing. He nuzzled my hand eagerly and I smiled. I think I made a friend.
