Keanu Reeves x reader (song: I Could Be The One- Donna Lewis)

"And I would lie here in the darkness, and I would lie here for all time, and I would lie here watching over you, comfort you, sing to you."

Keanu turns his head, feeling the grainy sand shift beneath him. She's looking up, admiring the stars shining against the darkened sky while he admires her. The waves crash against the shore nosily but they both remain unbothered. He watches her, and all Keanu can think about is how remarkably beautiful Y/n looks in the pale moonlight.  The way it makes her hair shine, how the stars reflects in her eyes.

For a while now, Keanu has been debating with himself, part of him wants to tell her how he feels while the other tells him that if he does, he might lose her. She's one of his closest friends, he can't lose her. But he doesn't want to just be her friend either, every time she tells him about someone she's dating, there's a tightness in his chest, fear that she'll ride off into the metaphorical sunset with someone else. Someone who isn't afraid. It's funny, he thinks, fear is holding him back from telling her how far he's fallen for her and, one day, it might also be the reason he'll lose her.

"Why are you looking at me like that?" Keanu blinks himself of his daze and only just realizes that he never took his eyes off of Y/n. She's squinting in the darkness, trying to get a better look at him, and Keanu feels like he's a deer caught in headlights.

I'm in love with you, he wants to say, but instead, he's left stuttering, blurting out the first thing that pops into his head, "I, uh....you look nice tonight."

Y/n silently sends a thanks to the heavens for the near darkness of the lonely beach, otherwise, Keanu might have seen the heat in her cheeks when he said she looked nice. She smiles lightly, meeting his dark gaze, wondering if it's possible for her to lose herself in his eyes. "Thanks," she breaths.

"No problem," he chuckles. She loves it when he smiles, it's a pity he doesn't more often. Lately though, he does it more, and sometimes she's even graced with a genuine laugh. Little does Y/n know, she's more than half the reason. Just the sight of her is enough to brighten his mood on the gloomiest of days.

There's a stray lock of hair falling over his eyes and Y/n wishes that she could just reach over and tuck it behind his ear, but knows that she shouldn't. If she did, she might not be able to stop herself from doing more, from destroying a perfect friendship. If only he felt the same, she thinks, then things could be different. She could stop running down dead ends with people who mean nothing more than a fun night to her and spend her life with someone who truly matters. Biting her lips at the troubling thoughts, Y/n sits up, propping herself on her elbows, staring at the ocean, only the white foam of the waves visible. "Do you want to take a walk?"

Keanu sits up, pushing himself off the ground, dusting the sand out of his hair, "Sure," he offers his hand to help her up and Y/n smiles, taking it.

Together, they walk along the shore, in ankle deep in cold water, Y/n's shoulder brushing Keanu's arm. For a while, neither of them speak, but really, words aren't always needed between the two. In fact, they could spend hours in each other's company, unspeaking, just being. After a while though, when they near a cluster of rocks that sit about a foot deep into the water, Keanu speaks up, "Thanks for coming with me tonight," he doesn't look her way, but Y/n can see the turmoil etching his handsome features.

Nodding, she loops her arm in his, pressing her head against his bicep, "Of course, you know I'm always up for an impromptu beach trip. Even if it is at nine o'clock in the night." When Keanu doesn't laugh, opting to continue staring at their feet, Y/n's expression grows somber with worry, "What's wrong?"

He shrugs, shaking his head, "It's nothing, I'm fine," Keanu forces himself to smile. He hates when she worries and even more so when it's about him.

Y/n scoffs, "Don't lie to me Ke, I can tell you have something on you mind. You don't need to beat yourself up holding it in," Y/n stops abruptly and Keanu turns to look at her, "I'm here for you, always."

"Come on, lets keep going," he urges her forward and Y/n complies, but he can tell she's not going to drop the issue until he talks about what's bothering him. When they near the rocks, he suggests they sit and after another bout of silence, he speaks up again, "I'm scared Y/n."

"Of?" Y/n doesn't think she's ever seen him this....down. He's always the one telling her that everything is going to be okay, that things are going to work out just the way they were meant to. And that even if they didn't go her way, he'd be there. Now though, that man was gone, replaced with one who was conflicted, who looked genuinely afraid of whatever was going on in his head, one who looked lonely.

Keanu swallowed tightly and as he spoke his fears, he realized how real they were. "What if I'm meant to be alone?" His eyes remain trained to the water but Y/n can see the pain in them. He doesn't deserve this, not her sweet Keanu. Then again, he doesn't deserve half of the things that's he's lived through, all the loss and pain that he carries. If only she could take it away, or at the very least, help him carry it.

Sucking in a shaking breath, Y/n reaches over, lacing her fingers with Keanu's, "You feel alone?" She looks at him, but he doesn't look back, and he doesn't respond either, "Cause you're not. I'm right here."

"But you won't be forever," finally, Keanu spares her a glance, "One day you're going to get married and you going to have a family and there won't be time for me," even as he spoke, Keanu though that he sounded immature, like a child who was scared to grow up, "One day you'll leave. Everyone leaves."

Laying her head on his shoulder, Keanu proceeded to lay his head on hers, "Not me, I'll always be here." Tears prickle at Y/n's eyes but she tries to ignore him, reminding herself that she's supposed to be reassuring him, not crying over his worries.

Her words are a promise that she can't possibly be sure that she can keep, but for some reason, the reason they comfort Keanu, just a little.

"How can you be so sure?" He wonders out loud, moving so they can look at each other, their hands still joined in his lap.

"Because," Y/n begins, smiling sadly, "You're my best friend. Because my life is better with you in it," swallowing thickly, Y/n casts her gaze to their hands, afraid that even in the darkness her eyes would give too much away, "Because I love you Keanu."

Gasping quietly, Keanu furrows his brows in confusion. Does she mean it?  Gently, he tips her face upwards, he wants to respond, say he feels the same, but what if he's got it all wrong? "Do you mean that?"

"Of course. I think, that maybe I have for a long time now," Y/n laughs nervously, a little embarrassed by saying it, feeling more exposed than she usually prefers.

"I love you too," neither of them has admitted romantic love, but the air seems to have changed between them. It feels more intimate, like they're closer than they were before. "Y/n?" Her response comes in a quiet hum, "What if you're the one?" It was a ridiculous question, he's not even sure if he believes in the notion of there being someone for everyone. In fact, he doesn't even know if she believes it.

"I think I'd like that. But only if you'd be the one too," Y/n can't see it, but Keanu smiles as he nuzzles closer to her just after pressing a kiss to her head.

As Y/n leans in closer and he moves his hand to snake around her waist, and she holds him in place with a sideways hug. The new position leaves them looking the perfect image of a couple of lovers enjoying a night on the water. "I'd like that," Keanu says finally. They don't speak after that, there's no need to, there's enough in the silence to tell them that everything has changed.

It's okay though, there are no nerves, no fears of a new beginning. Maybe it's because parts of them has already known for a long time, they've always been each other's one
