Chapter I: What Do You Want From Me?
“I dare you to kiss me”.
All the confidence I built up for the past half hour vanished. I was staring at the stormy blue grayish eyes of Damon. He and his stupid cloud-high self esteem always manage to make me feel like worthless shit.
“No”.
I couldn’t even dare to think about kissing him. That would only enlarge his already too wide god complex. I was proud to be, most likely, the only girl he couldn’t get if he wanted. But he didn’t want me; he was merely messing with my head. Thank God.
“I knew you would chicken out. But this is a game and you chose dare, so I dared you. Now kiss me.”
Now he was a few inches away from me. I stood up and got as far away from him as possible. Who cares if I’m a chicken? I would never for the life of me kiss his cocky self.
“Not in a million years Ferran. This game sucks”.
“You suck”.
He glared at me for what felt like an eternity and left. All the people in the room were visibly tense. My best friend Annie stood beside me and gave me a worried look. She out of all the people in our big group was the only one that knew how much I loathed Damon Ferran.
“Are you ok? You look like shit Nikki”.
“Well, I feel like shit. Let’s go out, I need some air”.
Primary school passed with flying colors for me. Freshman year at high school was the pit of hell thanks to the Devil himself. He did everything possible to ruin my social life. Humiliated me in all the ways his tiny conceited brain could come up with and didn’t give a damn about our friendship, yeah, we used to be best friends. That’s Damon for you.
I used all sophomore and junior year to get my dignity back, I made a lot of friends and grew from a little skinny girl who had brackets and always looked sick pale to a decent looking girl who got wolf whistles when walking down the halls in school or at the streets. My body had an actual shape now and my silhouette was defined. I was still pale, but not in a sick way. My hair was dark brown and went to my middle back in beautiful ringlets. I loved my hair. My eyes were hazel and I was a good 5’6 tall.
I was back to normal and my life was pretty good, I wasn’t about to let Ferran ruin it.
Annie and I sat on the porch and stared into the stormy sky.
“He’s such a jerk. Don’t pay attention to him, really.” Annie was trying to comfort me.
“I know. I don’t care what he does. He can go die for all I care”
“Nikki, don’t say that! He’s infuriating, I get it. But he doesn’t deserve to die”.
“Oh God Annie, give me break! I don’t really mean it!”
“Oh. Ok.”
We stayed silent for about half hour.
“All right, Time to go back inside” I said abruptly getting up and knocking Annie out of her daydream, probably about Jimmy. She had a major crush on him but she wouldn’t say a word. That to me was downright stupid. Jimbo was probably as much in love with her as she was with him, if not more. They were the stupidest persons in the world. That leaving Damon aside, he’s unbeatable in the brain damage department.
“Are you sure you wanna go back inside, Damon’s still there”. She eyed me worriedly.
“Yup, don’t worry, I’ll make him vanish with my psychic powers” I said making a face “That would be seriously cool”.
“Yeah… Oh, and look! He’s being five again!”
“What a surprise”.
We walked inside the house and Damon was tickling Emily on the floor. She was screaming for her life but her dearest boyfriend, Cody, was doing nothing but enjoying the show.
“Do something moron!” Emily said breathing heavily.
“Tsk, tsk, that’s not the way you treat your boyfriend bunny, besides, I can’t tickle you cause get all moody, he can do it for me thou” Cody returned.
“Yeah, and I love to be glared at” Damon added.
“Then go tickle Nikki, she’s kill you with just one look” Emily said. Suddenly, Damon got on his feet and stared at me like I was an alien. I flinched under his cold gaze until he moved again, took his car keys from the coffee table and left, slamming the door on his way out.
“That sure went well” said Cody, looking as uncomfortable as his girlfriend, who was standing awkwardly in the middle of the room, scratching nervously the back of her neck.
“Um… I think I should get going. Can you drive me home babe?” She asked Cody, he nodded with too much enthusiasm; they said their goodbyes and were out the door in a matter of seconds. Eager much? Ok, yes, it wasn’t a happy comment but is not like we’re gonna kill her for that.
“I’m going too, I have to help my dad clean the truck, we went hunting yesterday” said Jimmy. Annie looked kind of disappointed.
“Annie, you can ride with Jimbo, you said you needed to get home in about twenty, right?” Annie looked at me confused, then realization hit her and she fought a smile that was threatening to take over her face.
“Yeah… do you mind Jim?” She asked sweetly, smiling slightly. Jimmy, unlike her, grinned widely. Oh boy, he’s lost.
“N-Not at all” He hurriedly said. Ha-ha, lost as in LOST. Annie blushed a deep red and mouthed “I’ll kill you but thanks”. How I managed to figure that one out, I’ll never know.
That left Sheryl and I alone.
“So, what do you want to do Robin?” I asked her while plopping down on the couch.
“Sorry Batman, but I have to pay a visit to the Joker…” The Joker was her boyfriend, he attended to a different school, the reason we called him the Joker was because he always had this huge creepy smile that only Sheryl would find “adorable”.
“No worries partner, say hi to Ronnie for me. Tell him to behave or I’ll have to punish him”
Sheryl laughed, put his raincoat on and waved goodbye to me. I walked her out the door just as the first crash of thunder roared and a flash of lightening lit up the sky. She groaned and started walking-running towards Ronnie’s house, which luckily was four blocks away from my house. Then he could drive her home in his car, although that wouldn’t keep her from getting soaked, because that car was… well, a pathetic excuse for a car.
I went back inside and scanned the living room. I started cleaning up, it was a mess and my mom would be home in about an hour or two. After cleaning most of the room I spotted a hoodie lying on the floor behind the couch. I picked it up and smelled it. Men’s. More specifically Damon’s. I had to admit it, he wore the most appealing perfume, but that was it, his whole self was completely unappealing, although only to me apparently.
I hugged the hoodie tightly, unable to stop all the memories flooding my mind. I shook my head violently and shut my eyes, trying to calm myself down. I needed to get this despicable piece of clothing out of my house as soon as possible, meaning tomorrow at school.
“What a Sunday” I thought bitterly.
