Chapter XI: “Oh no you didn’t”

Nicole’s P.O.V.

Even though I had originally thought the worst had passed, I knew for a fact hell was about to break loose when on Monday I entered school hand in hand with Damon Ferran. I know it sounds pretty cliché but everybody stopped what they were doing and stared, like really stared at us, with no remorse. I was beginning to feel uncomfortable and tried to let go of Damon’s hand, but as if knowing what I was going to do, he held me tighter. When I caught glimpse of Annie walking up to us, I panicked.

“Damon, let go, c’mon!”, I begged him.

“No”, he said determined. “You’re going to tell her now, in front of me, and she’s going to accept me. Period”. I didn’t like the fact he was giving me orders, but I was too scared to be furious.

“What is this?”, Annie stood in front of us, gesturing to our intertwined hands with a disgusted face.

“This is…”, I trailed off, racking my brain in search for the best words, so I wouldn’t set her rage free.

“We’re dating Helton, face it”, Damon cut me off. I glared at him. If there was anything worse than having my best friend wanting to kill my boyfriend, that was definitely having the whole school as an audience.

“You insufferable son of a-“, started Annie, but I stopped her.

“Not here”, I said glaring at both of them. They were successfully getting on my nerves.

We walked to class, the three of us not talking. Annie was muttering not-so-lady-like words. Damon was wearing his infamous smirk and I was glaring at everything in general. I sat with Damon because I didn’t want to talk to Annie yet, I was hoping she would cool off. Once it was launch time, I grabbed her hand and forced her to walk outside with me.

“He hurt you!”, she screamed at me. “How can you even look at him?”. I could see she was really upset and worried about me.

“Annie…”, I sighed, “I can’t explain it. I like him, okay? I always have. You didn’t see him the other night… I don’t care if you believe him, I do. And it should be enough, because being with him makes me happy, and I just can’t pretend I hate him anymore”, I said with pleading eyes.

“Did he explain?”, she asked.

“No. And I don’t think he will, not for a while at least…”

“Fine…”, she gave me a hug and I felt my body relax. Finally, it was all good now.

“Are you coming?”, Damon had reached us and was extending an arm to me.

“Yeah, I’m starving!”, I said, taking his hand. “Let’s go Ann”. She mumbled something, but joined us.

“Oh, I officially moved to your table”, Damon commented.

“What!? No!”, Annie complained, “Seriously?”, she gave me a look of exasperation.

“Well, Jim comes with me, we’re a combo”, Damon added, “But, if you want us to leave…”, he trailed off.

“No!”, she all but shouted, “I mean, it’d be rude of me not to give you a chance…”, she quickly made up.

“Right… When are either of you going to man up and do something about it?”, Damon asked.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about”, my best friend answered.

At that, we reached the table. Everybody seemed to be laughing at something Jim had said. When he saw Annie he quickly sobered up and remained silent. She frowned and sat down. We all ate in peace and I couldn’t have been happier. I felt Damon’s grey eyes scanning me and I turned to give him a questioning look. He just shrugged his shoulders.
