mike entered history, sitting down on the table beside jane, and dropped his bag at his feet. it was the week after mike had brutally embarrassed himself in front of jane's dad, and despite jane constantly reassuring him about it mike still felt like a royal idiot.

"i called myself your boyfriend!" mike said for the fifth time since the dreadful incident happened last thursday. "mike, i've told you already he didn't pay any attention to it."

mike rubbed his hands down his face, embarrassment seeping off of him.

"that's what he wants you to think jane, but i know what he's planning. he's going to catch me off guard and murder me in my sleep, i bet you! he'll hide my body in your backyard to remind you never to associate yourself with such a thing again! i can feel his cold hands wrapping around my poor throat now..."

jane rolled her eyes at mike's dramatics, instead focusing on staring at the board in front of them.

mike couldn't believe her. how could she focus on schoolwork when he was suffering through the next worst thing after an adult's midlife crisis?

"alright class. for your first project, you and your partner are going to observe the world around you. you're going to try and find some historic artifacts or buildings around hawkins and then research them. and no troy, you cannot use the excuse of not finding any because i've done my research and i know for a fact there are many of them around here."

troy rolled his eyes at this. mike smiled. mike: one. troy: zero

"the partners will not be chosen by me but if i feel like i don't enjoy a certain pairing i won't hesitate to split you apart. you hear that troy and jake?"

mike instantly turned to jane just as she turned to look at him. "want to be my partner?" mike asked quickly, wanting to be the first one to actually say the words.

jane opened her mouth to speak but was interrupted by a tall, troll resembling dickhead.

"hey jane," troy said, ignoring mike completely. "uh hey," jane replied, glancing back at mike worriedly. mike hadn't gotten beaten up by troy in front of jane yet, but he was sure she could guess who gave him those bruises from the first day they met.

"so. you want to pair up for this thing?" mike opened his mouth to announce his presence, to say something, but jane beat him to it. "you're too late. i'm going with mike. sorry."
