AN Based on an event that actually happened and that I wish I had video footage of.

"I'm starving!", I groan. Taylor had taken me out to do some shopping. We had been out for about three hours. Now my stomach was in need of something unhealthy to gorge on.
"I know the perfect place to get some food!", Tay smiles. "It's not much. Like, at all. But they've some good stuff"
"I'll take it!"
The place we go isn't even a restaurant or cafe. It's a little truck on a street corner close to a park. It's crowded in this area. People are queuing up in their little groups. It takes about fifteen minutes before we actually get to the front but Taylor has already informed me about all the best choices.

"IF YOU WANT EXTRA CHEESE THEN BUY SOME FROM JESSIE'S PLACE", the man at the counter yells to an arrogant customer, making me jump.
"Bob has anger issues", Taylor whispers.
"Really?", I ask, sarcastically.
Bob was a thirty-something year old who smelled like every fast food place on earth. His dark hair was thickly gelled back into what looked like a mini tidal wave. A fist slams down on the counter, making me jump again. "What'll it be- Taylor! Baby! God it's good to see some decent people around here", Bob says with a viscous shake of Tay's hand. "And who's this little lady?", he asks, nodding towards me and holding out a greasy hand.
"Ella", I say, timidly accepting his handshake.
"Well, Ella. Any friend of Taylor's is a friend of mine", he smiles, revealing yellow teeth. Taylor seems to be my passport to everywhere. She knows so many people and is greeted with the utmost respect wherever we go.

"I'm guessing you want two of my finest hamburgers?", Bob asks.
"You know me too well", Tay smirks. We take our food and then Taylor insists we go to the park to eat.

"If you like this then you'll love my burgers", Taylor says as we walk through the park.
"You can make burgers?", I ask. Even though I'm unsurprised.
"I can make everything"
"You can't make me like cats"
"Because you refuse to hold Meredith! I can't make you like cats if won't even try to bond with mine"
"She scratched my neck, Taylor!", I yell, pulling back my collar to reveal the scar.
"You were annoying her.."
"I was sitting on the couch! On my laptop!"
"She hates the clicky noise of the keyboard!"
"The click- oh my god, Tay!", I say, attempting to shove her off of the path.
Taylor smirks and steadies herself from my attack. We continue to walk through the park, not really going anywhere in particular. We stop for a moment so Tay can answer a text message. As she's typing I have a look around. The park is adorable. Little brightly coloured potted plants are dotted around the area. Squirrels scamper around the large trees. One of them seems to spot me and stops running. Another one joins him. I smile at this odd little acknowledgment. I hadn't had many encounters with squirrels before. Especially not like this.

But then something begins to feel off. Their beady eyes have somewhat of an intensity to them. And they're both completely still. Not even a twitch happens from either of them. I back away a little. Taylor finishes whatever she was dealing with on her phone with a sigh and puts it in her bag. "You okay?", she asks, noticing my discomfort. She follows my gaze towards the animals and then jumps a little once she realises what I'm looking at. "Oh god! Ella, don't move!", she squeaks, freezing with her food close to her chest.
"Why?"
"Those are squirrels!", she says in a loud whisper, not taking her eyes off of the things.
"I noticed", I whisper back.
"No! you've no idea!", she hisses, gripping my shoulder. My scar from her cat burns but before I can yell, Taylor interrupts me with a sentence I never thought I'd hear. "Those are New Yorker squirrels"
"Uhh-"
"Ssshhhh!!! Oh my god!", Taylor exclaims behind gritted teeth. "Maybe if we turn around slowly we can...Oh no"
"What? W-what is it?", I ask, still focusing my gaze on the creatures.
"We are so dead", Tay gasps, not really answering my question. Her eyes are wide. "We are so so dead!"

The squirrels haven't moved yet. They remain in the same unnerving pose as when they first stopped running about.

One of their faces jerks violently to one side.

Taylor's grip on my shoulder tightens. She leans into my ear and whispers dramatically, "I love you, Ella"
"Wha-"
"See ya!", she calls, already halfway down the path. I'm about to ask where she's going but then a claw tickles at my leg. Something scampers up back and around my waist. I scream and flail. Wherever Taylor is, she's doing the same from what I can hear. She bumps into me and we continue to yell frantically as our bodies are attacked by tiny woodland creatures. My hair is knotted and tangled by little paws. Fluffy tails brush over my face. It's insane. That's the best way I can describe it. "Drop your food!", Taylor manages to scream. "Drop it!". I do as told and she does the same. The squirrels continue to play around us for a few more seconds until eventually jumping off from our shoulders, grabbing our food and then disappearing up a tree.

What. Just. Happened?

"Are you alright?", Taylor breathes, pulling me in for a hug. I'm dazed and don't answer immediately, my hands clinging to her long arms for dear life. "Ell? Snap out of it", Tay says, pulling away and giving the side of my face a few light taps. "That was horrific!", I cry, eventually. I look down at my red hands which are still shaking. Taylor takes them and kisses them. "I forgot that those guys were here", she says.
"How could you forget that killer squirrels could attack you around here?!", I yell.
"New York is big!", she giggles. "Come on, let's go back and get more food. I took like four bites out of that thing"

So we do. We go back to get two more burgers. Needless to say we ate them somewhere that wasn't the park. I had a new thing to add to my long list of fears. Squirrels.
