If anyone had ever told you waiting was the hardest part of being a human, you would have scoffed at them. But after 36 hours and no word from either Dean or Cas, you knew it to be true. Sam moved between both rooms, checking on you while trying to keep himself occupied with research. You understood why, knowing that he was keeping all options open in case Dean came back empty-handed.
You kept your daughter's little bunny in your hand, the softness of it comforting you much like it had your daughter. You wished she had it with her now, to comfort her. You had no idea what she was going through, and that thought terrified you.
"Y/N," Sam said your name softly as he opened the door. He had a smile on his face, but it wasn't what you first noticed. It was the bag on his back, the keys hanging from his hand. "Are you ready to get your daughter back?"
"You've heard from Dean?" You exclaimed as you raced around the room, shoving things into your bag as fast as you could. "He's found her?"
"His lead is solid," Sam answered carefully. "He wants us on our way incase this thing goes our way."
Squeezing the stuffed bunny in your hands, you couldn't help but smile. Things were beginning to look up, and soon you might have your little girl back in your arms. Your family would be back together, and you could finally get on with life. "Y/N, I don't want to see your hopes dashed. We both know my brother. We know he'll do anything to get your little girl back. But they have to know we're coming."
You patted Sam's shoulder as you passed him. "Sam, it's a start. And that's good enough for me."
Sam drove the Impala while you sat quietly in the passenger seat. Usually, the radio blared with classic rock, and you usually loved it. But you were more interested in the road ahead of you, and the promise of your family reunited once more.
Sam's phone lay silent between you, both of you glancing at it ever a couple of minutes. Hoping that it would ring. You were anxious, knowing that the longer things took, the less a happy outcome it would be.
"They're probably just busy scoping out the place," Sam muttered as he stopped for gas and coffee for the two of you.
"Sure," you whispered, refusing to give up the idea that things were going to end well.
You were three hours into your drive when Dean finally called. You picked up Sam's phone, answering it immediately. "Dean! What's going on?"
"Hey sweetheart," he chuckled. "I take it you're almost here."
"About another hour."
You could hear him mutter something to Cas before he turned back to the phone. "Listen, it's a nightmare here. We were going to try to go in without you, but it's too much for only two of us."
"We're almost there," you assured him. "Have you seen her? Have you seen our baby girl?"
He paused before answering, and that split second almost had your heart breaking. "I did. She's tough, our girl."
Sniffling back tears, you smiled over at Sam. "Yes she is. Figure out a plan, and we'll be there soon."
Dean had given directions to a small hotel on the outskirts of town. With barely five rooms, it boasted a hot tub overlooking the river and fresh items from the bakery down the street. You knew that Dean had probably already sampled every item the bakery had brought in.
Sam parked the Impala by room 3, and before you could open the door Dean was rushing out. He pulled you into his arms, his smile infectious. You leaned into his touch, letting loose a deep breath of relief. You were all back together, and once you rescued your daughter....everything would be perfect.
"Dean, did you come up with a plan?" You asked as Sam came to stand beside you, handing his brother the keys. "When do we leave?"
"Whoa, wait a minute," Dean chuckled, and it was then you noticed how happy he was. How relaxed and ecstatic he acted. Not like the Dean who was getting ready to bust into an Angelic stronghold and save his daughter.
"Hey Sam," Dean turned to his brother. "Thanks for busting ass here."
"Of course. We're both ready for whatever plan you've come up with."
"About that," Dean started to say, but stopped when the hotel door opened, and Cas walked outside, holding the hand of your daughter.
"Ava," you whispered, your heart thudding fast in your chest as you raced forward. Dropping to your knees, you pulled her into your arms, holding her as tight as you could. "Baby girl, I've missed you so much!"
"Mommy!"
Sniffling, you loosened your hold, just slightly, to get a good look at your daughter. She seemed taller now, in the months you had been apart. Her golden hair was longer, darker, almost the same color as Dean's. Her green eyes, exactly the same shade as her Dad's, looked up at you. She seemed unharmed, even though her clothes were tattered, no shoes on her feet. "Are you okay sweetie?"
"I missed you so much Mommy," she cried, holding you tight. Picking her up, you held her tight, stepping into the hotel room, knowing Dean and everyone else would follow.
You sank down on the first bed, rocking your daughter in your arms, looking over her head to Dean. "What happened? I thought you were going to wait for me."
"We were," he answered, pulling a chair over, his hand brushing against the both of you. "We were keeping an eye out. They had the place surrounded. Ava was in the middle. Cas and I, we were trying to come up with a plan when this bright white light surrounded the area. We couldn't see. Suddenly it lifted, and our little girl was holding my hand."
"I didn't like those people," Ava whispered against my neck. "They were mean and made me eat cheese sandwiches. I hate cheese sandwiches."
"Can you tell me what happened?"
She nodded, her fingers playing with the loose thread on your shirt. "I could feel the change. Angels had left. I could feel my Daddy, knew he was close. I wanted to be beside him more than anything. And suddenly, I was."
"Powers," Dean whispered. "Your powers."
"How did I do that?" She asked you, her green eyes full of confusion.
"Honey, that's a story for another day," you told her. "But it's okay. You're safe now."
She noticed her uncle Sam then and ran over to him. He reached down, picking her up and giving her a huge hug. You stood up, hugging Dean. "We did it. We're a family again."
"With a powerful daughter," he muttered. "What about the Angels. Where do you think they went?"
"Gone. At least for now. And we can be prepared. We'll teach her how to use her powers for good. We'll survive. As long as we stay together," you answered, cuddling against his side, your heart bursting with love as you heard the sound of your daughter giggling for the first time in months. And while you knew the Angels wouldn't give up so easily, you knew that you would be ready for them this time.
