CHAPTER ONE
in the summer of '89.

...

June 1989; Derry, Maine

"Best. Feeling. Ever."

Nicole looked up from her sketchbook. She had skipped the final class to draw the school before all the kids left and she was just finishing up as they piled out-- screaming and cheering into the sky at their victory over the past school year.

"Oh yeah? Try tickling your pickle for the first time."

To her right, currently dumping their bags into the trash cans, was the Losers Club. Consisting of the trashmouth Richie Tozier, the hypochondriac Eddie Kaspbrak, Stanley Uris-- the Jewish boy who was a target a lot more than he deserved-- and Stuttering Bill Denbrough; they were well known as being kids that no one wanted to be friends with.

Hey, at least they had each other as friends. It was more than she had.

Nicole couldn't even bring herself to look at Bill... she had been the last one to see his little brother, who was currently missing and had been for about eight months.

Realizing she'd been distracted, Nicole shook her head and blinked back to reality. Thinking about that night made her head spin. Forget. Almost as soon as she looked up from her sketchbook, it was yanked out of her hands and discarded onto the sidewalk a few feet off.

"Hey!" She yelped, but recoiled when she saw Henry Bowers sneering above her. There were class bullies and school bullies, sure... but Bowers was the town bully. He hassled everyone for everything-- everyone except his father--

"What'cha drawing there, Nicky? Your boyfriend?" Henry crouched in front of her, then stepped away as he laughed. "Oh, right, sorry. You're the freak without friends. Isn't that right, freak?" He snickered as his friends tormented the Losers.

Richie was pulled backwards, crashing into Stanley and sending them both tumbling to the ground. Patrick, one of Henry's goons, grabbed something of Stanley's and tossed it into a passing bus.

Still, Nicole kept her eyes on the ground. She just wished Henry would leave her alone. "Asshole." She grumbled. Henry crouched down to her level.

"What was that, freak? Did you wanna tell me something?" His voice was low. Nicole met his eyes, glaring daggers.

"Just stating the truth, asshole. One day you're going to hurt the wrong person, and then you'll be in trouble."
