CHAPTER NINE
evaporated....
The seemingly-endless track of screaming finally died away once their mad-dash away was successful. Nicole, in a haze, skidded her bike to a stop and let herself fall onto the nearest yard. Exhaustion held her limbs, pain still burning in her hand.
Her eyes fell closed.
"Nicole, open your eyes you idiot. We still gotta get you help, come on." Ben was too loud. Nicole winced, drawing her eyebrows together.
"Fuck off." She had grumbled before she checked her thoughts. "Shit, I'm sorry. Here." She opened one eye, but the world was too bright, too loud. She was still shaking, still felt her blood running cold.
"This is Eddie's place. Come on, Eds."
Nicole ignored their voices. Why were they yelling?
She could soon hear the voice of a very angry woman, but it sounded far away. A car door slammed and her eyes popped open. Someone was standing over her.
"Let's go, sleepy head." Mike helped her up, keeping her steady.
"Okay, I saw the well. We kn-know where i-it is and, next time, we'll b-be better prepared." Bill said to the remaining group. Eddie was gone to the hospital, she guessed, and that angry woman had been his mother.
"No!" Stan cried. "No next time, Bill."
"Why? We all know no one else is going to do anything about it." Beverly interjected.
"So?" Richie shrugged. "Eddie almost died in there... and look at this motherfucker! He's leaking hamburger helper! Nicole almost lost her fucking hand to a clown and might bleed out any minute now." Richie shrieked. Nicole frowned.
"No need to yell, Rich. Gonna make my head explode." She snapped. "And I'm not gonna bleed out." Bill's concerned gaze lingered on her as Dani ran and buried her face into her big sister's shirt.
"I'm never going back there. Face it, Bill. Georgie's dead... and I don't want my friends to be among the others who vanish--" Richie went to move past Bill, but Bill stopped him with his shoulder.
"Y-y-yo-you t-ta-take that back!" Nicole felt her stomach twist, her heart tighten. She felt so sorry for Bill... after everything... Georgie must really be gone, seeing what that clown was capable of.
Richie frowned and adjusted his glasses. "You couldn't save him, but you can still save yourself--"
"No! Y-y-you're just s-scared, b-but take that back!" With his raw sadness and anger bubbling over, Bill shoved Richie forward. Richie, to Nic's dismay, retaliated with another push.
