^could not find a fitting gif so enjoy the cuteness :p
A/N- What's up, guys? Sorry for the lack of updates recently, school, work, and sports take up most of my time. But I'm trying the best I can! Also please note this isn't the end of the book, I have much more in store for our favorite assassin ;) One more thing, this chapter will be much shorter than usual because I didn't want to jump into out new conflict right away. I thought where I ended the part was good :)
also please vote!!!
---I'VE HAD IT UP TO HERE
---
"Right then, Steve. What do you say we bust this bitch?" I smirk.
Steve grins. "I've been waiting."
"One thing though. After I press this button the ship will launch immediately. Meaning there's only one way for you to get off this ship."
His face twists in concern. He knows what's coming. "No," he deadpans. "I'm not letting you speed me out of here."
"I'm sorry," I say, pulling a face. "But unless you want to go to Hala..."
Rogers sighs. "Obviously I don't. But you can't even lift me, I'm too heavy."
My brows raise. "Mildly offensive."
"No. Final answer, no."
Sorry Stevie, you're gonna hate me for this one, but the old man can't run as fast as he needs to. I speed over to the launch button and press it, then to him and scoop him up bridal style. He's right, he is heavy, but it's nothing I can't handle.
Now time to get the fuck out of this shithole. The dead Kree lining the halls really bring together the decor.
The doors are slightly closed by the time we exit, and instead of putting Steve down I decide to run him to the jet. Once we're in there I put him down, but keep a hand on his shoulder so he stays in Zara-time. AKA super-speed.
"Oh my god..." he groans, making sense of his surroundings. "You did it."
"I had to," I defend.
Steve looks at his friends, all still like statues. "What's wrong with them?"
"To put it simply, you're still moving super fast. They're moving, just really slowly."
"Huh," Steve marvels. "Wait, if you can do this, why'd you insist on carrying me out of here?"
"I don't know... shits and giggles?"
Steve huffs. "Well can you let me out now?"
"Yeah. I just wanted to warn you about the gut-punch."
"What gut-punch?"
"This one." Whenever someone goes from super-speed to normal, the sudden change makes it feel like some asshole dropped 9 pounds of cement on your stomach. Just thought I'd warn little Stevie.
Right as I take my hand off him, he doubles over, clutching his stomach. He stumbles to the side but Tony steadies him.
I don't feel it anymore, I guess I've gotten used to it.
I can see the accusation in Tony's eyes, he thinks I hurt Steve. He still doesn't trust me. Does anyone here?
It doesn't matter. We dot the job done and that's what counts.
I can see Tony about to open his mouth but Steve stops him. "It's alright," he says, slightly embarrassed. "She had to get me out somehow."
The ground rumbles a bit as the giant Kree ship blasts off at the speed of light.
"Well that's that." Tony states, powering on the jet. "Might want to buckle in princess, it's going to be a bumpy ride."
I smack him upside the head.
---
"Are you sure you're alright?" Why does Tony care?
"Fine," I answer. I hate being enclosed with all these people in such a tiny space. This jet can't land fast enough.
Tony shakes his head. "Really? Cause I'm like 90% sure I just saw you kill your own brother."
"I said I'm fine Tony, lay off."
"Hmm, no. Open up."
"Stop. Last warning."
"Tell me about your family." At this point I can't tell if he's joking or not. But I don't care. I'm upset.
It's times like this I'm thankful for my speed. I take a dagger from my suit and throw Tony against the wall, pressing the knife to his neck.
"What was that, Stark?"
The man has the audacity to laugh. "If you wanted me up against the wall, you should have just said so."
The temptation gnaws away at me- to send this knife through Tony's neck and then do the same to the others. It would be easy- too easy- to take down the team. None of them could hope to stop me, not even Thor. I'm unstoppable.
I can see it now, Fury's face when he pries the doors of the jet open and his eyes land immediately on the corpses of Earth's Best Defenders.
Worth it.
Within an instant I can feel two pairs of hands pull me back, snapping me out of my daydream. I identify one of them as Rogers' as he speaks sternly in my ear.
"Not now Keaton, not now." He also takes the blade out of my hand and puts it back where it came from. Tony looks flustered.
I don't even know why I'm still here. I could survive a fall from this height... probably. But it's worth the risk to get away from the clown gang.
"You know, I've actually just come to the realization that I don't need to be here. So goodbye."
"Zara, wait-" is the last thing I hear before I phase through the floor of the Avenger's quinjet.
---
I'm finally home. By home, I mean the one bedroom apartment I've been living in. I'm still in my suit, so I speed up the stairs and into my room.
The smell of this place is nice, not gonna lie. But something feels off.
Someone's here.
The living room lamp is on, I don't think I've even used it since I bought it. And there's a radio playing. I don't own a radio.
The light from the lamp casts an ominous shadow on the wall, ma man is sitting on my sofa. I can see all his movements. He's just sitting, twiddling his thumbs.
I see him as I turn the corner. Fucking Nick Fury.
"Jesus Christ," I yell at him. "I thought you were an actual threat."
"Amusing, Keaton. I need to talk to you."
Regular Fury, stoic as always. But I'm not exited for this talk.
"Let me guess. I'm in some form of trouble?"
Fury snickers. "Surprisingly, it's the opposite. I"m here to offer you a deal."
"A deal?" I repeat.
He nods, "Yeah, and a damn good one, too. I'm willing to wipe your ledger clean, granted you never commit another crime again. You steal one penny and you're public enemy number one again."
Interesting. Very promising. "In return for..."
"You lend your services to the Avengers whenever necessary. When we have someone contact you."
Fury stands, stretching out his hand for me to shake. I'm obviously going to take the deal, but I hesitate for a second first. This means more time with Stark.
Uggghhhhhhhh.
But I guess it's worth it.
"You got yourself a deal, Director."
