chapter seventeen: a little chat 6970 words
Lin had to poke another hole in the leather band of Dale's watch so it would fit her. She tried first with one of her arrows but then when it wouldn't pierce it just the way she wanted, she asked Maggie if she knew where she could find an ice pick. A few open drawers later and Lin had the watch on, shaking her wrist to ensure it wouldn't move around.
Lori poured water from the blue kettle she'd set over the fire. "So what you gonna do? We'd all feel better if we knew the plan." She passed the cup to Carl who looked down at it then over to Lin, a silent question if she wanted some first. She shook her head, letting him keep it.
"Is there a plan?" Andrea asked. She didn't like not knowing. She also didn't like the new accessory on Lin's wrist. Why he gave it to Lin was a complete fucking mystery to her. But with each conversation she shared with Dale, she could feel the rift forming between them. Dale was overbearing in his want to protect the people he cared about. That rift wasn't forming between him and Lin. They were still best buds, like nothing had happened. She didn't get it.
"We gonna keep him here?" Glenn listed out another choice if they didn't want to kill Randall. Rick and Shane exchanged a look, one that clearly only the two of them knew the meaning of. It made Lin worry, the dynamic between the two. When they'd come back, they were both sporting few bruises and bloodstains. As far as Lin knew, walkers didn't exactly punch their food and judging by the look of Randall, the kid could barely punch if his life depended on it.
Footsteps interrupted the conversation, everyone turning their eyes to the archer approaching the group.
"Boy there's got a gang, 30 men. They have heavy artillery and they ain't lookin' to make friends. The roll through here, our boys are dead. And our women, they're gonna wish they were." Everyone was focused on his words, the new fear that formed at the idea of being found by another group. But not Lin. Daryl's knuckles were bloody, split open and gross.
"What did you do?" She stood from where she'd been sitting, reaching for the hand Daryl had holding his crossbow strap. He sidestepped her, brushing off her concern for the whole group to see.
"Had a little chat." Lin retracted her hand and checked him quick for any other injuries. Beside the smear of blood on his pants, there wasn't anything else that she could see. The smear had to be from his knife. It was too smooth to be a passing swipe of a blood hand. He'd used his knife to 'chat' with Randall. Lin sighed. That meant he had to have touched his stitches.
"No one goes near this guy," Rick instructed. Yeah, fuck that.
"Rick, what are you going to do?" Lori asked. He looked away from his wife for a second, compiling the right answer, or at least what he and Shane had agreed was right.
"We have no choice. He's a threat. We have to eliminate the threat." Lin didn't like how that sounded. He was still just a kid.
"You're just gonna kill him?" Dale asked in shock.
