chapter two: one bloody hand 2320 words
Rick left to put on his uniform again, the sun having dried all the sweat out of it. He made sure to send Carol a thankful smile as he passed. Lin set her hand on her gun, cocking it to load the chamber and slipped it back into her holster.
Shane and Rick came back up the hill, their argument loud for everyone to hear.
"Could you just tell me why?" Shane kept asking. Lin pushed away from the rv, already on Rick's side of this argument. "Why would you risk your life for a douche bag like Merle Dixon?"
"Hey," Daryl cut in, "Choose your words more carefully."
"No, I did," Shane retorted right back in Daryl's face. Douchebag's what I meant. Merle Dixon- the guy wouldn't give you a glass of water if you were dying of thirst."
Lin stepped in, her hand landing flat on Shane's chest to back him up. "It's his brother, Shane. It's family. Who gives a shit what choice they make?" Because Lori sure made a mistake with Shane but she was still her sister.
"What he would or wouldn't do doesn't interest me," Rick stated as a fact over Lin's shoulder. "I can't let a man die of thirst- me. Thirst and exposure." He took the Georgia heat into consideration which was downright intolerable in certain places. "We left him like an animal caught in a trap. That's no way for anything to die, let alone a human being."
Lin stepped out from between the two men, sure they would go at each other the moment she did.
Lori, who had watched the entire thing go down, sensed a fault in the plan. "So you and Daryl, that's your big plan?"
Rick shrugged at first, turned at the waist to face Glenn, the man who had saved him in the first place.
"Oh, come on."
"You know the way. You've been there before- in and out, no problem. You said so yourself." Glenn smoothed his hair back and put his cap back on. "It's not fair of me to ask, I know that, but I'd feel a lot better with you along. I know she would too," Rick nodded back to Lori.
"That's just great. Now you're gonna risk three men, huh?" Shane was ever the chipper one this morning.
"Four," T-Dog volunteered. Lin chuckled to herself. How to word this properly?
"Make it five then," she crossed her arms. Yup, nailed it. Daryl huffed aloud.
"My day just gets better and better, don't it?"
Shane pointed a finger at Lin. "You're not going. No way."
Lin exhaled sharp out of her nose. "Hop off, Shane. I'm a pretty good shot."
"It took you long enough to work up the guts to shoot a gun at first. You'd freeze up out there."
"The hell I would," she unfolded her arms in anger. "I never shot a gun because you never let me have one. I've been trying to pull my weight around here but you've only let the guys do the work." She swallowed her fear of speaking back to him. "If it were Lori up there I'd have gone back yesterday."
