SEEING YOU AGAIN

After that we decided to stay friends. We cared about each other enough to do that at least. We still didn't talk very much, though. Pretty much just the occasional email.

It is beyond awkward becoming friends with your ex. You have to adjust to having a completely different relationship with them. You can't talk about half the things you used to, and you have to pretend it doesn't bother you when they tell you they're seeing someone, even though technically I was the first one to start dating again.

Almost three years after we had broken up I came home one day to a voicemail on my machine and was shocked to hear her voice. She told me that she was gong to be in New Jersey for the weekend and wanted to meet up.

That Sunday I took her to dinner and she told me about her schooling, and how she pretty much had a guaranteed a job at a really good hospital when she graduated medical school in 4 years. I had avoided telling her about my school and work. After that we went back to my apartment.

"Wow this is a nice place" she complimented.

"Yeah. I think I did ok"

"Do you have to have roomates?"

"Just Leo. Remember him?" I asked.

"Of course. Your best friend. You guys were inseperable in high school. I thought he stayed in New York"

"For school yeah but he managed to graduate in just three years and he liked it here better"

"Wow two people violating the sacred law. Going from bring New Yorkers to bring New Jersians". I laughed. She walked over and picked up the graduation picture I had framed. It was of Jamie, Leo, Sarah, Jamie's best friend and me.

"Oh the cuatro amigos" she smiled.  "High school was great wasn't it?" She asked.

"Yeah it was" I said remembering that time.

"Too bad it's over"

"But don't you think they're things we can preserve?" I asked. I think she noticed where I was going.

"Yeah as much as we can" I smiled. I heard the phone ring but I let it go to voicemail. I wish I would have realized who it was and that if they left a voicemail Jamie would hear it.

"So this is why you've avoided us for two months" i heard my moms voice say through the machine,"You never reenrolled in Princeton and you  quit your job. What's your plan now? What are you even going to do with your life" I ran over and unplugged the machine. I looked at Jamie really embarrassed.

"Is that why you didn't really talk about school and work?" I nodded.

"I just hated it. It wasn't for me" I explained. I should have told her right them and there. That I had quit my job and dropped out because I got into Trisch. That I was moving back to New York, and that I hasn't told my parents since they would have probably reacted worse because they thought my deem was pointless and unrealistic,  but I didn't.

" I'm sure things will figure themselves out. You needed to do what you felt was right."

We grabbed a couple of beers and sat on the couch. We talked for hours. We laughed and it felt like old times. After a while I noticed she was rubbing her eyes alot.

"Are you ok?"

"I think I have an eyelash in my eye"

"Let me take a look" I got close to her and when looked into those beautiful blue eyes, that was it.

I felt myself lean in and she did the same thing.

We shared a magical kiss and one thing led to another.
