Dewayne POV

3:56 PM

Damn, Harmony.

I glance at the clock, gripping the steering wheel with one hand as I make a left onto Jefferson. I took my time in the shower—had to. Ain't no way I'm walkin' in her spot smellin' like Carmen. Harmony got a nose like a damn bloodhound, and I ain't ready to fuck up whatever this is... not yet, anyway.

I pull up to Pizza Hut and grab the order I placed earlier—two large cheese pizzas and a 2-liter Mountain Dew. I ain't sure what she likes exactly, but cheese felt like a safe bet. And if she got an attitude when I walk in, at least I won't be showin' up empty-handed.

As I'm walking back to my car, I hear heels clicking behind me.

"Hey, Dewayne. Long time no see," a familiar voice calls out, syrupy and bold.

I turn just enough to see Kimberly strutting her way over like she ownin' the damn parking lot.

"Umm... hey, Kimberly," I say flatly, opening my car door and sliding the pizza boxes onto the passenger seat.

She's already stepping closer, hands on her hips like she rehearsed this moment in her mirror.

"Why you ain't been hittin' me up lately?" she asks, one eyebrow raised like she just caught me cheatin' in a dream.

I glance down at my watch.

4:15 PM

"I've been busy," I say, keeping my tone cool and nonchalant, already halfway into my seat. She doesn't budge though—now she's leanin' into the car, blocking my door from closing. Her perfume smacks me in the face—some strong, flowery shit that I know damn well gon' stick to my clothes if I even breathe too hard.

I subtly lean away from her, tryin' to keep that scent far off me.

"Kimberly. I really gotta go," I say, starting the engine. "I'll hit you up when I can."

She rolls her eyes and sucks her teeth like I just told her I ain't never loved her. With an exaggerated sigh, she steps back and slams the door for me, hard enough to shake the car.

I waste no time pulling off.

Damn. These females really out here actin' like I belong to 'em.

But only one girl got me out here runnin' late and dodgin' drama just so I can show up lookin' and smellin' right for her.

Harmony.

And she don't even know it yet.

I park in front of her apartment and hop out, balancing the pizzas in one hand and the 2-liter in the other. Soon as I step inside the building, I head down the hall, heart low-key pounding. But just before I round the corner, I hear Harmony's laugh.

I freeze for a second. That laugh always hits different. Light. Warm. Genuine.

But then I hear a man's voice with it.

I round the corner and see her standing there with that nigga Terrance. He says something low that makes her laugh again before turning and disappearing into his apartment. I walk up slowly, jaw tight, and eyes locked on her.

Harmony turns to me, her smile fading just a little. I don't say shit as I follow her inside. I chew the inside of my cheek while heading straight to the kitchen, setting the pizzas and the 2-liter on the counter harder than I need to.
