Danielle Nettie Davis
The constant vibration of her phone woke Danielle up. Luckily for whoever was trying to call her, Danielle is a light sleeper. She grabs her phone from under her pillow. Her eyes squint from the bright screen and glance at the unknown number. Danielle presses the speaker button before holding the phone to her ear.
"Hello. It's Dani." She groggily says.
"Hey...it's me, Christine, Neveah's friend?"
She manages to hear most of the words said and rubs her tired eyes to force herself to wake up more. She remembers Christine but mostly remembers her blonde hair. "Okay."
"I wanted to call so you wouldn't like panic or anything, but Neveah may or may not be on her way to your house...I kinda kicked her out. She might just go to a motel, but I know you don't like sudden guests so...yeah. Just keep an eye out. She left like twenty minutes ago."
"Okay. Thank you."
"You don't wanna ask why?"
Danielle yawned, "What?"
"Why I kicked her out?"
She didn't want to ask why. Danielle didn't like it when people asked her why she did certain things, so why do the same to others? She'd rather not ask unless she needed to and she also really wanted to end the call soon. "No. Do you want me to ask?"
"Not really."
"Okay. Bye then."
"See ya."
Danielle sighs and puts her phone down. She sits up and reaches over to grab her new hearing aids out of the chargers.
She had just gotten them today, her last pair were incredibly uncomfortable. They were an in-the-ear type of hearing aids, and she made the mistake of being cheap. Then one day she forgot to take them out right before she jumped into a lake. It took a couple of months to go to the doctor's, decide on a new pair, and find the money to pay for them. She hated asking her parents for help, they always made it into a big deal. Last week she was finally able to pay for them after two months of saving up. She wasn't very eager to wear hearing aids again, they didn't help that much, but her parents always had a fit whenever they find out she isn't using them.
This time she got a receiver-in-canal style, it rests behind the ear, a wire connects the hearing aid to a speaker piece that fits in the ear canal. It's barely visible, unlike the last pair she had. She still hasn't decided how often she was going to wear them. Of course, hearing aids amplify sound, it's also slightly easier to hear higher pitches, and they help you tell what direction sound is coming from. Most of all they differentiate between human voices and background noise.
But they aren't perfect. Even with hearing aids on, she doesn't understand every word someone said, and sounds are still either too loud or nonexistent. Most of all, sometimes she doesn't want to hear well. She knows it's bad, but it gets annoying trying to understand all the noises. Sometimes it's too overwhelming, but she could say the same without the aids.
Danielle slips both the hearing aids on and stands up from her bed. She walks over to her dresser and slips on a pair of pants as well as a t-shirt. She usually sleeps in her underwear since it was too hot to sleep in clothing. Despite the fan on the ceiling, it was usually too hot because she always laid on a fluffy blanket and slept with a quilt on top of her, since she hated the feeling of her sheets. If Danielle was sleeping someplace else, she'd sleep on top of the covers.
She steps downstairs, opens a small closet, and takes out a towel. Sitting on the couch, she listens for the sound of knocking.
