꧁༺ GOOD LUCK BABE! ༻꧂

night passed slowly as Demitra watched over Joel, holding his hand as Ellie lay on his shoulder, snoozing quietly. every now and then she smeared water along his lips in attempt to stop him from dehydrating, but she knew it would be no use unless he woke up to actually drink it.

as she reached for the cup again, she winced, feeling the stinging tug of her own open gash. she still hadn't cleaned or closed it, under so much stress she had almost completely forgotten. unzipping her coat, she shivered at the onslaught of cold air but slipped it off her shoulder's anyways. the knife had cut straight through her coat and into her flesh, leaving an angry looking open wound. she resisted the urge to gag as she slowly peeled the damp cold clothing from her skin and tossed the shirt aside, leaving herself in a short sleeved t-shirt.

she assessed the injury carefully, attempting to twist her arm without making it gush blood once more. however, that was proven impossible as the wound cracked and she felt a little tear go through her skin. and soon, warm blood was trickling from her arm and dribbling down her elbow.

"fuck!" her wince was quiet and painfilled, and caused Ellie to stir in her sleep. shutting her mouth, she reached for her long sleeve shirt. taking the cup next, she carefully poured enough water to make the end of the sleeve wet before she placed the cup down.

using her uninjured arm, she dragged the wet sleeve along her skin, gnawing on her lip as the pain shot through her nerves and along to her shoulder and hand. tears prickled in her eyes, but she knew she had to get on with it and stop being such a baby. once the dried blood was mostly gone, she reached for the sewing kit and grabbed a different needle and thread.

she struggled to thread the needle with her teeth and one hand, but after a minute and many grumbles of annoyance she got it through. getting enough thread through the needle, she lined it up with the corner f her injury. "shit." she whispered, feeling her heart plummet as she realised what she needed to do.

she needed to surprise herself otherwise she'd never go through with it. "five, four, three, two-" she cut herself off and jammed the needle through her skin, swallowing her own cry of pain as she pulled it through the other side. "ow, ow, ow, ow." she repeated under her breath, resisting the urge to gag as she repeatedly pulled the needle through her own skin, messily sewin the wound shut.

by the time she was done, her whole body was quivering, about to put itself into shock. releasing a hollow breath, she slowly laid back down onto her back and laid her injured arm across her stomach.

she hadn't noticed until she woke up, but she fell asleep only minutes later, exhausted from blood loss, hunger and physical excursion. not to mention hours of extreme levels of stress coursing through her veins. adrenaline highs were something else.

when she woke up again, she found her arm had been wrapped up securely in a torn part of someone's plaid shirt and her wool lined jacket had been placed over her body which was curled into Joel's bicep for warmth. which he failed to provide as he shivered in his place, still knocked out cold.

and Ellie, well Ellie was nowhere to be seen. and nor was Joel's rifle.

with a grunt and a groan, Demitra sat up and reached for her backpack. digging through, she pulled out another long sleeve shirt and tugged it over her head, followed by her jackets. after zipping it up, she knelt down besides Joel and placed the back of her hand on his forehead. it was hot ands clammy, growing a fever. "shit."

Joel mumbled in response but his eyes remained closed.

Demitra sighed and reached for the water, dribbling the littlest bit on his parted lips but being sure not to water board him in his sleep. "where are you Ellie?" she whispered, standing back up. she looked up, searching for potential footsteps up stairs, but there was nothing.
