꧁༺ GOOD LUCK BABE! ༻꧂

Demitra's hand ached from how hard she gripped her fork, shovelling mashed potatoes and chicken into her mouth by the forkful, barely stopping to breathe. she'd been so hungry for so long, she couldn't stop herself when Tommy placed the plate in front of her.

"slow down, nobody's gonna take it from you." Mike said, placing his hand on her shoulder to pull her back from shoving her face into her plate like a dog. Demitra glanced at him sheepishly, and looked back down at her plate before taking a smaller mouthful.

Joel glanced at the man with a squint. he already didn't like him. something about his beady little eyes and the way he had been pushing Demitra around over the past half an hour put him off.

"it's not lady like." Mike added.

Demitra sighed, slightly losing her appetite.

Ellie glanced at her, and Demitra could feel the eyes, so she gave a small, shiny smile and took another forkful of chicken, making a show of eating it so help herself force it down, no longer feeling hungry.

"there's more food if you need it." Maria, the woman from before, told the three of them kindly, a polite smile on her pretty face.

"thank you, ma'am." Joel said once he finished chewing. "been a while since we've had a proper meal." his tone was polite, showing something Ellie and Demitra hadn't ever seen before.

"actually i don't think i've ever had a proper meal." Ellie said through a mouthful of potatoes. "this is fucking amazing." Demitra snorted a laugh at the girl's face, and Ellie crossed her eyes at her.

"girls." Joel scolded. "let's mind our manners."

"thank you, Joel, but i think i can discipline my own child." Mike piped up, taking a sip from his beer.

"dad." Demitra muttered pointedly, staring with a pleading look at him. Mike glared at Joel before looking down at Demitra.

"sorry, pumpkin. just missed you, is all."

Demitra hummed and turned back to the table, sending Joel a small grin. "sorry Joel, i'll mind my manners." Joel gave her a look before poking at the chicken on his plate.

just as Demitra turned to Ellie to mumble something, Ellie glared off at a girl standing in front of them. she was short, with tanned skin, and shoulder length brown hair. pretty as well, with large doe like brown eyes.

that was as much as Demitra could get from her before she scurried away as Ellie called out angrily at her, "what!"

"Ellie!" Joel reprimanded, "what's wrong with you?"

"what? what about her manners?" Ellie rose her voice so the girl would hear as she ran away, a smug smile mixing in with Ellie's glare when she turned back to Joel and Demitra. "she was staring at her like a freak!"

"Ellie-,"

"no!" Ellie dropped her cutlery on the table.

"she's just curious." Maria defended the young girl lightly. the two teenager's stopped bickering and faced her. "the kids around here don't really talk or act like you two."

"that feels backhanded." Demitra answered, squinting suspiciously at the older woman.

"she's not wrong, Demi." Mike sighed, finishing off his beer. "i'm going to get another. anybody want anything?" he surveyed the table, but each person declined his offer so he nodded and stood. "be right back."

Demitra watched her dad walk away, then sighed and turned back to the table. he was very different to what she thought he'd be like. she didn't really know what she was expecting from him, but it wasn't exactly this.
