"Muelara found a half pound of gold upriver"

"Really?"

"Vincan started gambling again"

"You don't say? Why?"

"They say his wife left him"

"Someone found giant rodents in Battlebrook"

"That's not surprising, who knows what sort of creatures the war bred"

"What war?"

"Never mind"

"I hear Seobaak got some sort of potion"

At this Mordecelli glanced around. He slowly got up and walked over to the couple sitting at the opposite end of the tavern, the source of this particular bit of hearsay.

"What did you say?" Mordecelli asked quietly. By now the entire tavern had fallen silent, everyone staring at the scene.

"Seobaak got some sort of potion," the husband repeated nervously. "One of the elven servants gave it to him last night in Battlebrook forests."

"I heard he got two lifetimes in prison when he was caught," a tired-looking dwarf chimed in.

"Serves him right, betraying the elf masters like that."

"Who? Who gave it to him?" Mordecelli asked.

"No one knows, sir."

"And Seobaak?"

"Disappeared, just like that," the husband snapped his fingers.

"Of all the people to get Lethine," Mordecelli murmured.

"Pardon?"

"Never mind."

Mordecelli nodded curtly, then spun on his heel and strode out the front door, his purple cape billowing behind him.

He made his way through the crowded streets of Draguilun, dodging hawkers and peddlers. It wasn't until he made it to the outskirts of the city that he started to hatch a plan.
