The air index is low today, Jungsik felt the warm spring sun on his face. Laying on his back in the backyard with a smile across his face. All he could think of was that he was done high school exams and the bliss of freedom was in the air.
"Get up off the ground, you will ruin your suit." Mae says sternly standing over Jungsik.
"Relax Mae, This will be one of the last times I will wear a suit. Besides, Aboeji isn't even home yet." Jungsik smiles opening his eyes to look up at Mae.
Mae's appearance was that of a typical nanny. Her hair pulled back in a bun with streaks of gray, the crows feet wrinkles at the corner of her eyes crease everytime she worries about Jungsik. Her face is small and round, she stands 5'4 but has a dominant presence. She knew Jungsik ever since he started grade school and has never called in a sick day. She served Jungsik well over the years, Jungsik only trusted her.
"Your father will be home any minute, get up and finish washing up for dinner." Mae scolds.
"Ah Mae, just a few more minutes." Jungsik winks at Mae.
"Those green puppy eyes will not work today. You're not a little boy anymore." Mae walks away.
Jungsik smiles and closes his eyes and stays laying on the grass.
Jungsik's features are different from his peers. His hair is light brown, his skin is pale, big round green eyes like jade, a sharp jawline and tall like his father standing 6'0. Everything about him is charismatic. The world is his for the taking. His father groomed and prepared him to take over his successful shipping business.
Jungsik had other plans that he would announce at his graduation dinner that is being held for him."You can do this, you got this." Jungsik says to himself.
"I believe Mae has asked you several times to get up, son." Jisung says with disappointment.
Jisung or Jin is what he preferred to be called. Is tall, muscled and handsome, his black hair slicked back and strong Korean features.
"Aboeji, why so serious?"
"Get up, you know where we have to be." Jisung sighs staring down at his son.
"Aboejiiiiiiii, come lay with me?" Jungsik pouts.
"There's no time for games, get up." Jisung starts to raise his voice.
Jungsik opens his eyes and jumps to his feet straightening out his suit and bows slightly. "Sorry father."
Jisung stares at his son and turns to walk back into their home.
Jungsik smirks and runs after his father and tackles him."I said join me Aboeji." Jungsik laughs as they fall to the ground.
They both laugh and wrestle on the ground playfully like a father and son would.
"Gotcha," Jungsik locks his arms around his father. Jisung smirks and maneuvers his way around and bear hugs Jungsik.
"You still have alot to learn grasshopper, do you give?"
"apayo, apayo."
Jisung laughs and releases his son and jumps to his feet lifting him up with him.
"Adeul, why did you grow so fast?"
"Abeoji, why you so strong for an old man?"
"Ayego, you ripped my suit, tsk." Jisung looks at his ripped pocket on his jacket.
"meinhae."
"It's just a rip, no need to apologize come on son, let's wash up and go celebrate." Jisung grabs his son by the shoulders and walk into their house.
Walking into the house the kitchen and living room are connected. the kitchen is covered with white cabinets and stainless steel appliances. The livingroom has wall that is shelves and full of books with a flatscreen in the middle of it. A connected L shaped black leather couch sits in front of another wall that has a fireplace.
On the mantle sits an urn with a picture of Jisung, his late mother and baby Jungsik.
Jungsik always made it a point to walk by it every day and smile as if his mother was there."Eomma, today we are going to celebrate me finishing school. I wish you were to see and celebrate with us." A lump forms in Jungsik throat.
"She's with us all the time. Aren't you Maina my love?" Jisung grabs their son by shoulders smiling at the picture.
Jungsik turns and cries into his fathers arms "I'm sorry abeoji, I miss her even though I don't remember her."
"It's ok, I miss her everyday. She loved you entirely. It's a strong love that you still feel it. She is the love of my life."
"Is that why you never married? because of eomma?" Jungsik sniffles.
"She was it for me. No one could take her place. You remind me of her all the time." Jisung hugs his son tighter.
"Oh yeah, How?"
"Well for example, You both speak Korean when you're happy about food or feeling playful." Jisung eyes start to water up as he grabs Jungsik's face and holds his head up.
Jungsik smiles "Ne,"
Both pull each other in for a long embrace shedding a few tears as they talk about Maina.
Maina, came into Jisung's life so unexpectedly, both didnt anticipate falling in love, getting married and having the only child that Jisung raised alone. A few months after child birth Marina's cancer was at the highest level and treatments wouldn't be effective. Her and Jisung knew that during pregnancy that treatments wouldn't be possible. That time was precious and Maina knew that she would be leaving the best of her in their son Jungsik. A baby that Jisung raised alone with love. He kept his promise to his wife to raise him with love and to know who his mother was.
"Go straighten yourself up. Let's go to dinner, your grandparents and friends await." Jisung gently wipes the tears from Jungsik's face and kisses his forehead.
"Ne,"
