The once beautiful city was a silent graveyard when we stepped out into the open streets. Abandoned cars littered around, pieces of rotten flesh were everywhere, blood was plastered on these vehicles and on the streets. and the dead silence haunted us. Not a bird in the sky or a dog on land. No human or zombie alike. We could only stare at the deserted city and listen to its empty sound.
One of the soldiers, Lukeman by name, a black American, got sick by the scenery and vomited. This wasn't the first time he has seen the sight of blood. However, this was the first time he had vomited because of blood.
" What's wrong Lukeman?", asked Musa," Haven't seen this kind of wasteland?".
" In all my years", replied Lukeman.
" Save that for later. We need to find a bus, more preferably a school bus".
" Sir!", yelled a soldier named Henry," There's one I'm seeing five blocks to our left".
" Good eyesight Henry. Lets get to it as fast as possible", replied Musa.
Everyone held a gun and walked cautiously towards the bus. We came to where it was and secured the perimeter. Blue and Frank checked the engines while Erik sat confortably on the driver's seat. When the duo motioned to Erik to start the engines, he did as he was told. The bus came back to life and brought smiles on our faces.
Everyone was on the bus and Erik was behind the wheel. Musa sat on the other side and stared at the lifeless city. Lukeman and Frank sat together in the front row. Lukeman kept quiet throughout the drive while Frank was singing and talking simultaneously until Musa told him to shut the hell up. And where was I? Beside Blue as always. I was however lost in thoughts, thinking about Tom. Part of me blamed Musa for killing him, while part of me felt that I could have at least tried to save him. Tom was the wisest person I've ever known, and it hurt that he didn't die at the right time. I could still recall his words in the airplane:
" In this war, enemies must put aside their petty grivances if they want to survive".
Maybe he was right, I thought, maybe I should forgive Musa and try as much to survive, if possible, with him. I just hope he too would think the same way.
I looked at Blue and saw him reading his Bible again. This time, he was reading Leviticus chapter eleven, the chapter that talked about the unclean animals.
" What's so special about them?", I asked," That made God forbid the Isrealities to eat or touch their corpses".
" I don't know yet", replied Blue," But maybe I shall find out someday".
" I hope you will".
" Thanks. You know, they could be useful to you in the long run".
" Really? How?".
" I don't know Joe. Just saying".
I sighed and rest my head against my seat.
Meanwhile, Erik striked a conversation with Musa.
" Why did you save him?", asked Erik.
" Felt like it", replied Musa.
" Felt like it? I know there's something behind it Musa".
" So you say".
" I know he killed your mother. But trying to kill him won't bring her back".
" Erik".
" Yes sir".
" Keep driving and stop talking".
Erik continued the drive and stopped talking. He drives for about ten minutes and slowly came to a stop.
" Hey why are we stopping Erik?", complained Frank.
" What the hell?", said Erik as he stared at a wave of zombies ten metres away that were trying to break through the gates of a building. Hundreds of them were hitting themselves on the gates and walls of the building.
" What in God's name are they trying to do?", asked Frank.
" What else fool?", replied Musa," They want to break in".
" What's going on?", I asked as I came close to the driver's seat.
" Seems like someone needs our help", said Erik.
" How are we then going to get pass them?".
" What do you say boss? leave the dead alone or walk into the dead".
Musa sighed and said," I'm not afarid, even in the face of monsters".
He got down from the bus, looked down and picked up an iron bar and a sack. He came back and said to Erik," Is this thing long enough to wedge itself between your seat and the wheel?".
" Yes it will", replied Erik after he had examined it," But it will blow off the horn".
" That's what I want", said Musa," The rest of you should drop a gernade each in the sack, leave the bus and find somewhere safe to hide. Lukeman, break the back glass completely. When everyone's out, wedge this bar exactly where I showed you and leave this bus. I'll do the rest myself".
Everyone, including me, did as we were told. Each man dropped a gernade and left the bus. Lukeman broke the glass, dropped his gernade and left.
" Are you sure about this?", asked Erik.
" Definitely", replied Musa.
" Alright then. Lets play".
As soon as the horn sounded, the zombies stopped their attack and ran towards the bus. They attacked the bus, with some of them entering through the back glass.
Musa stood up like a hero and got ready to throw his gernade.
" Can he do it?", asked Blue.
" He's been playing baseball all his life. He never lost a throw", said Lukeman.
Indeed, Lukeman was right. Musa threw the gernade which landed right into the bus and exploded with the other gernades there. The explosion was huge, killing many of them and injuring lots of them.
" Go! Go! Go!", yelled Musa," Shoot 'em in the head!".
It was an awesome moment for men as they killed these zombies left and right. They were not afraid to walk into the dead and face these demons.
