"So...your name is Luther?"
I stared at her and nodded.
"When do you want to get together for the project?"
"Today."
"What time?"
"Right now."
Ava looked up from writing dates into her planner. "Now?"
I nodded again. "Come home with me."
"Do you have a car?"
I shook my head.
"Do you walk?"
I nodded.
She let out a sigh. "I suppose I can drive you."
"Okay."
The bell rang. Ava turned her head and looked to see that the clock had ticked over to three o'clock. A grin spread across my lips as I saw the anxiety of being alone with me crawl it's way over her pale face.
The two of us walked out of class together. The people we passed all stared at us intently as we walked down the hall. Whether they were staring at me (like usual), or staring at Ava because she was unfamiliar and beautiful, or because they were stunned that the two of us were walking together, it didn't matter to me. All that mattered to me was that I was going to have new meat all to myself and there was nothing that anybody could do to stop me. So, naturally I grinned at them, for I took great pride in what I was doing; what I was about to do.
Finally, we arrived to the parking lot and made our way over to her silver SUV. The looks that people threw at us as they saw me get into her car got stranger and curiouser, feeding my ego more than ever. Even as we began to drive off, Ava cast me some suspicious glances.
"Are you like, a witch or something?" she asked me out of the blue.
"What makes you ask that?"
"Just...it's the way that people look at you. Like you did something to deserve it." She stared ahead at the road as if waiting for some sort of explanation, but I remained silent. She continued on, "They say that you're responsible for that girl's death. Which, I know is absurd, but..." She kept rambling on and on like there was no tomorrow. Well, there wasn't going to be a tomorrow. For her, at least.
At that point, I couldn't wait to kill her. I continued to stare out the window as she talked.
"Luther?"
I snapped out of my thoughts and turned my head towards her.
"Hm?"
"I said that I'll be your friend if you'd like."
I tilted my head. "But...no one wants to be my friend."
She smiled at me softly. "That's okay."
I furrowed my brows, utterly confused by this girl. Squinting my eyes, I asked "Don't you want to fit in?"
"Don't you?" she retorted.
Taken aback by her argument, I stared at her and slipped deep into thought. This girl, this beautiful girl, was as far out of my league as she could get. She seemed intelligent enough, and I could tell that she would've been in the popular crowd in no time at all. It truly baffled me as to why she would want to become close with me. But instead of revealing my emotions to her, I simply shrugged. "It doesn't matter anymore."
After giving a few more further navigation directions, we arrived in front of my house. As soon as we exited the car, a skeptical look crossed Ava's face while she stared at the crumbling house. She walked up inside behind me and scrunched up her nose as soon as she did.
