It was the sound of nothing, the sound of nothing jolted me from my sleep. Normally, living this deep in the city there would be some sort of noise.
A car wreck, a shot fired here and there, the occasional pleas for forgiveness from a god.
Now, there was nothing. The old couple upstairs were absolutely silent. The drunks across the hall weren't yelling at each other to drop dead.
Mom wasn't telling dad how lazy and worthless he was. Dad wasn't telling her to shut up.
I sighed throwing my head back against the pillow before lazily sliding off the bed. I landed with a thud and waited silently for my mom to come in and tell me to stop being such a lazy pain and to get dressed and ready for school.
No one came though. Still no noise. Still no mom or dad. With a groan of absolute laziness I crawled to the window before heaving myself up by the windowsill.
My blanket fell off my shoulders as my hands loosened their grip. You would have thought I had seen an angel or something. It was honestly so much more surprising.
There was no traffic.
Not a single car whizzed by. No helicopters filming for early morning traffic jams, no police cars lining the side of the road.
It would explain why it was so quiet but it didn't explain why it was like that to begin with.
Did everyone decided to take Monday off to be as lazy as me? Or did everyone die? I laughed at the audacity of that idea. That is so absurd.

Yeah I know, stupid, but it was six in the morning! I wasn't supposed to be all awake yet. But that still doesn't explain my obliviousness to the absence of my entire family.
I don't think I realized anything was completely amiss until I got downstairs only paying attention to my feet as I walked. I had walked smack dab into a wall.
Pretty sure that had not been there the day before.
