September 30

Today is Nanna's birthday. Dad said we should go to the beach since Nanna loves the ocean. So we are going to go when Nanna, mum, and Lydia come home. They went to the salon to get their nails done in the morning. Mum asked me to join in, but I do my own nails just fine. I told them I wanted to stay home and help dad pack.

8 p.m.

We just came back from the beach, and I am EXHAUSTED! I'm glad tomorrow is Sunday. I need to sleep in late.

Earlier, when the girl squad came back from the nail salon, we got on the road. The beach is a two hours drive. And I always sit in the back when we go out in the minivan. But today, when I got in, all our stuff was in there. I asked why they didn't put it in the trunk like always, and dad said one of the paints he bought for the kitchen spilled yesterday and messed it all up.

So I had to sit there with all the stuff around and on me.

It was super annoying. The umbrella kept falling on my head, and then Simon thought it would be funny to take a million pictures of me while Lou kept yelling, "Say cheers for the camera."

They were relentless! I was texting Wendy the whole time, so that sort of made the situation bearable.

After we got there and set everything up, I sat on the beach chair next to Nanna, reading my book and enjoying my Kit Kats. Lydia wandered off, and Simon was actively working to bury Lou in the sand.

"Easy with the book there, Alice," Dad said in disapproval. "You should be interacting with kids your own age, not sitting around with seniors."

"Who are you calling a senior?" Nanna snorted.

"Not you." He said to her with a chuckle and turned to me. "Look at Lydia. She already made some friends. Go introduce yourself."

Lydia was standing at the shore with a bunch of smoking HOT boys with surfboards. Not my scene.

"But dad—"

"No buts! You are too young to be sitting around reading all the time." Dad scolded.

"Go have a little fun, darling, will you?" Mom pitched in, supporting him.

After removing what I had stuffed in my bra, I got up groaning, and dragged my feet there. I was prepared for my usual routine of sunbathing and reading books.

When Lydia saw me, she looked all panicked and said,

"Guys! Meet my cousin Janice."

Cousin? Janice!

Lydia is the only child in the family who inherited my dad's light brown hair when the rest of us took after mum. But even with that difference, it is still easy to tell we are sisters.

Why did she need to be all flirtatious anyway? I thought she had a boyfriend!

The boys were nice, though. They offered to teach us how to surf, and surprisingly, I got the hang of it pretty quickly. I was surfing like a pro in no time. Wyatt, the hottie who was teaching me, even said,
