We both remained silent after that. Then Born's Electric love filled the air, interrupting the silence as my phone rung.
"It's my mum. We better get going." I told him, sitting up.
On the car ride home, we mostly remained silent, Weever softly playing on the stereo. I could feel Wyatt straining. He seemed noticeably uncomfortable, which in return made me feel conscious. He missed Jane's party of the year, as Cherry put it, to hang out with me, and I had somehow managed to ruin the night.
When we finally parked down the street from my house, I unbuckled my seat belt filled with sudden anxiety.
"Thank you for tonight. I had a great time." I told him.
He gave me a small smile, nodding.
"Okay, goodnight."
I opened the door.
"Wait!" He said just as I was getting out.
I paused halfway and turned to face him.
"I'm sorry about earlier. I don't know what came over me. I know you are in a relationship. I just— I lost control for a second. It won't happen again." He looked earnest, and I closed the door, settling in once again.
I couldn't believe he was apologizing to me? I was the one who owed him an apology. I practically pulled him closer and then freaked out. I was the girl who supposedly had a boyfriend but couldn't keep her hands to herself. I definitely did not want the night to end on a bad note after the amazing night we had together.
"Do you want to get a late dinner?" I asked. "My treat."
"Now?" He asked.
I buckled my seat belt and nodded.
"Unless you have other plans." I looked at him.
I knew my mum would probably kill me when I came home, but I would worry about that later.
"No, I just thought cause your mom called.. er.. never mind." He shook his head "So where should we go?" He asked.
Polly Molly was close by, and I liked their food. I knew Wendy had Sundays off, so there was no chance of running into her. That made me feel at ease which made me feel guilty. Because it meant I didn't want Wendy to know. I guess, in a way, I felt like I was letting her down by having feelings for someone who isn't her brother. We have fantasized about being sisters for real so many times. Her being an actual aunt to my children. It may sound stupid, but it meant something to us.
"Polly Molly," I told him. "It's close by."
He nodded, agreeing.
When we got to Polly Molly, there weren't a lot of people. Sunday nights are pretty slow. Wyatt and I sat across from each other in a booth, and Cheryl came and greeted us before taking our orders. It amazed me how she always had her curly blonde hair in pigtails. With her baby blue uniform and the little white cape, she looked like a cartoon character.
I guess it is sort of fitting since she is an actress. Well, more like a circus girl, but you've got to start somewhere. She is an exceptional skater, though. When Wendy first got the job, she couldn't get the hang of roller skating and serving at the same time. So she ended up breaking a lot of plates and almost got herself fired.
I ended up ordering a grilled cheeseburger and strawberry shake, and Wyatt got the turkey sandwich with a side of fries and a chocolate milkshake.
"I don't like chocolate," I told him when Cheryl left with our order.
