You are not a morning person. But Jake had been working so hard with his upcoming show that you wanted to do something special for him. You weren't sure how you were going to wake up first since you never did but your phone under your pillow was your best bet. You crossed your fingers as you fell asleep that your plan would work.
You woke up before your alarm which was a miracle and you looked over at Jake. He was sleeping so peacefully, you just wanted to kiss him. You held yourself back and slowly slid out of bed, careful not to move the sheets too much.
Sliding on your slippers you padded down the stairs to the kitchen. You quietly moved around the kitchen. You flinched when the pans clanged together as you got one out. You looked up at the ceiling where you knew Jake was sleeping and once you were sure he hadn't woken up, you kept moving quietly. You had made dough the night before and were very excited about the cinnamon rolls you were making.
You giddily added cinnamon brown sugar crumbles on top, dancing quietly as you did so. You had recently learned to make cinnamon rolls at your parent's house and Jake missed the chance to try them as they were devoured quickly. Softly you moved around the kitchen as you baked.
Soon, when the cinnamon rolls were in the oven you set the table with orange juice and plates and a table cloth. You topped it off by going out to your garden and picking the sunflower that you and Jake had been watching for the last couple of months. The birds could eat the seeds after you enjoyed the yellow during breakfast.
Taking the timer with you, you ran through the shower and put your contacts in. With about ten minutes left on the timer, you went downstairs to check on the rolls. They were rising beautifully which made you unendingly happy.
You crawled back into bed next to Jake with your cutest pajamas on despite the fact that they were not the ones you wore last night. Slowly you woke up Jake.
"Hey, baby. Wake up." He opened his eyes slightly. "Hi there" You grinned at him.
"You ok?" He mumbled at you, "you aren't peppy in the morning, babe"
You smiled, "I have a surprise for you." Jake looked slightly concerned and pushed himself up slightly.
"Huh? Were you up before me?" He asked. You smiled and giggled.
"Well, yeah. You deserve to be pampered, Jake. You have been working so hard."
Jake looked at you and you jumped out of bed. Walking around the bed, you pulled his hand and almost dragged him out of bed.
"Is there something burning?" Jake sniffed and you froze. Was there something burning? You walked to the bedroom door and opened it. Crap. You rushed down the stairs and ran to the oven, sliding slightly when you got there in your slippers.
You heard Jake's feet pad down the stairs behind you as you pulled the dish of rolls out of the oven. You smiled at him.
"It was just some sugar that dripped," you reassured him. You were very proud that you could pull this off.
Jake looked around and saw the table set.
"Did you get up early to do this for me?" Jake asked looking from the table to you as he rubbed his eyes.
"Why not?" You answered, clearly proud of yourself. Jake walked over to the table and pulled his chair out as you walked over with the pan of cinnamon rolls and set it on the decorative trivet you had insisted was necessary on a recent trip to the thrift store.
"I am glad that this is getting some use," Jake said pointing to the trivet. You laughed.
"I told you it was useful!" You felt vindicated. Jake leaned over the table to look at your cinnamon rolls. You both sat down at the table and he fluffed his napkin from the fold that you had learned from YouTube.
"Are these the cinnamon rolls that your family ate before I could try?" Jake said excitedly, his eyebrows shooting up.
"Yeah! I thought you might want to try them" You shrugged as you struggled to scoop the cinnamon rolls out of the pan. They stuck a little to the pan, but Jake didn't seem to mind. You put one of the rolls on his plate.
"Careful, they are hot," you warned him. He grabbed his knife and fork. You joined him in twisting pieces off and tasting your hard work. It was just how you remembered them. This was awesome. You were so glad that they turned out good. Jake hummed as he ate it.
"What do you think?" you asked hoping for a positive review. He looked up at you as if you were asking a dumb question. You might have been.
"I love them! I know why they got eaten so quickly before. If I had had the chance, I would have eaten them all before anyone else could." Jake made you grin with his compliments. "How many can I have?" He asked reaching for the server to get another.
"I'd like a couple more, but I made them for you so go ham" You said sitting back. Jake dug in to his second roll and was halfway through before you could see him take a breath. You laughed as he inhaled the sweet treat. He looked up at you and smiled before sitting back to admire you.
"Are those different pajamas?" He asked as he looked at your outfit. You looked at the table sheepishly.
"Yes, they are my favorite," you said. He laughed and you continued. "Plus, they don't smell like sweaty sleepy me." You smiled. He gave you so much crap for sweating in your sleep, but it wasn't your fault you liked heavy blankets in the summer. You had accepted it and were just waiting for him to accept it as well.
"I thought they were different. I thought I was going crazy for a second, but it turns out you are the one going crazy." He laughed with you and then looked at the table more carefully.
"Is that our sunflower?" He reached out and touched the flower you had picked.
"Yeah, I thought I could leave it on the patio table for the birds to eat after we enjoy it." You wiped your mouth with a napkin. Jake go up and walked around the table. You watched as he walked over to wrap his arms around you from behind. You leaned back into him and smiled up at him.
"Thank you, honey" Jake said lovingly before leaning down and kissing you softly. You could taste the orange juice on his lips.
Before he left to clean up, Jake whispered into the top of your head. "Is there a nap in the books for later today?" You laughed and nodded.
He smiled, "I thought so. But since it's my day off, maybe we can nap together."
You looked at him and agreed. "I like the sound of that."
