I love the sea's sounds and the way it reflects the sky. The colours that shimmer across its surface are unbelievable. This, combined with the colour of the water over white sand, surprises me every time. Its little things like these that we take for granted. Do you ever pass the hospital and watch all the patents making their way inside for a check -up or treatment and think that you’re so lucky to be in the best of health? There’s over seven billion people in the world, yet 1 in every 4.7 will die of cancer. That’s over 1 billion people! Even the people who look after themselves are not safe, no one is. But the truth is, we’re all going to die one way or another, so does it really matter how we do?
I brushed his matted coat with the palm of my hand. I’d seen pictures of toy poodles in magazines, little did I know that I’d own one myself. I pulled the tiny body into my hands, rubbing his coat gently. ‘I thought it would be good company for the baby when it comes in a few months’ he smiled kneeling down on the living room floor beside me. I smiled at the thought of us having our own little family. It wouldn’t be just the two of us anymore, but the three of us and the dog! When we got together a year ago we didn’t think that a year on, we’d be getting ready to have a baby together. ‘Six months to be precise. Oh Nath, have you got the other ultrasound pictures? I want to add them to the photo album with all the other ones, it’s just I forgot to ask this morning’ I asked placing the dog down on the floor. He squirmed around on the slippery timber, trying to get his grip. ‘Yeah, they’re in the kitchen I think. Shall I get them?’ he asked leaning in for a kiss. ‘Yes.. please’ I replied in between kisses. The dog sprinted off behind him, ready to explore his new surroundings.
Nathan rattled around in the kitchen, looking for the pictures. ‘Nath!’ I called taking a seat on the sofa. ‘What’s wrong?’ he asked sliding into the room in his socks as quick as a flash. ‘Is there something wrong with the baby?’ he asked worriedly sitting down beside me to take my hand. ‘I just wanted a cuddle’ I whispered. He smiled sweetly, rubbing his thumb against my hand. I moved in closer to him as he gently placed his hand on my stomach. He put his arm around my waist, pulling me closer to him. The dog rang around in circles, chasing after his own tail, but couldn’t catch it. No surprise there! ‘Have you thought of a name?’ he whispered, tracing shapes around my belly button. ‘For who? The dog or the baby?’ I asked. ‘Both’ he mumbled. ‘What about calling our new doggie Alfie?’ I suggested. ‘I like it! Alfie come here!’ he ordered just as Alfie jumped onto his lap. ‘I think Alfie likes his new name, don’t you Alfie!’ I laughed as he wagged his tail. ‘And what about our little baby?’ he asked kissing my stomach. ‘I like Harper for a girl and either Harley or Jordan for a boy’ I smiled. ‘I’m not sure I like Harper, but I do like the name Ruby’ he whispered, holding my fringe back from my face. ‘Ehh’ I mumbled. ‘Not a fan of Ruby?’ he asked a little disappointed. ‘I mean, it’s okay but, it wouldn’t be my first pick’ I explained. ‘I’m sure we can come to some conclusion before the baby is born. Now, are you ready to go? Our flight leaves in three hours. Wait, will you be okay to fly? I mean I checked with the woman at the airline and she said it would be fine, but I don’t want to put you and the baby in danger’ he mumbled so fast that his words were barely understandable. ‘Yeah, I’ll be fine! I’m only three months gone’ I sighed jumping to my feet. ‘I got Kelsey to pack a bag for you while we were at the pier. I thought that you wouldn’t be in the mood to pack.’ I smiled at how adorable he was.
We stood toe to toe right in front of each other. He’s sparkly green orbs made me queasy. ‘Let’s hope our baby has your eyes’ I whispered as our foreheads met. ‘But I want out baby to look like you, that way she’ll be gorgeous’ he whispered pecking my lips. ‘How do you know it’s a girl?’ I asked. ‘I have a feeling’ he shrugged. Alfie ran in circles around us, bringing him to my attention. ‘What’s going to happen to Alfie when we’re in Paris? We can’t leave him here all alone, can we Alfie?’ I asked rubbing his belly as I kneeled down beside him. ‘Tom and Kelsey will take care of him while we’re gone, so we have to drop him off just before we go to the airport’ he sighed kneeling down at the other side of Alfie. ‘Is it safe to bring him in the car?’ I asked not sure as to whether he should actually be allowed in it while it’s moving. ‘Yeah, of course! He’s not going to move around or anything! He’ll be fine’ he laughed. ‘You can take Alfie out to the car. I’ll bring the bags out in a minute, but first I’ll just make sure that all the doors are locked. We don’t want to come home and find the slender man hiding under our bed, now do we?’ he asked sarcastically, poking my nose. ‘Come on Alfie!’ I cheered, guiding him out the front door. He sprinted around the garden, slipping and sliding through the mud. ‘ALFIE!’ I screamed as he pranced towards me. I just avoided him, as he sprinted towards the clean grass, where he decided to roll around and luckily, he cleaned himself.
‘ALFIE! CAR NOW!’ I screamed pointing at the car. Luckily, he had been trained by his previous owner and was willing to follow everyone and anyone’s orders. He jumped up and down before I opened the back door and soon after I was strapped in the front myself, with Alfie calmly resting in the back. I beeped the horn repeatedly, forever waiting for Nathan to emerge. He struggled with the bags, a few falling from his grasp, but he stuffed them none the less into the boot of the car. He sighed as he sat into the car, plonking a little black box up on the dash in front of me. ‘You can’t open it until we get to the airport’ he whispered into my ear. My ear drum tickled from the presence of his warm breath. I squealed at the thought of another surprise from Nathan, on top of Alfie. Things are a lot sweeter when you don’t expect them!
We began the short journey to Tom and Kelsey’s flat, but little did we know that it would be the start of our longest journey together. Nathan came to a halt as the car in front stopped as the traffic lights turned red. Alfie slid along the back seat, causing his to clash with the door. He began barking furiously, showing his hyper side for the first time. He continued jumping around the car as Nath commenced driving again. ‘Alfie stop it!’ I demanded but this time he wasn’t obedient. His tiny body jumped into my lap, but he didn’t stay there for long. That’s when it happened. He jumped into Nathan’s lap, causing him to lose concentration. Not realising that the car in front stopped, he slammed the breaks last second, sending us flying into the car in front. I held my neck with the pain of whiplash, but it wasn’t finished yet. The force of our car sent both cars flying out onto the crossroads, in the path of the other cars. Before I had time to scream, yet another car at top speed jolted into us, causing my head to spin. For a few seconds I heard Nathan groan and scream my name. The stream of blood down my leg caught my eye, yet I thought I was seeing things. My vision turned blurry. I grabbed Nathan’s hand begging him not to leave me, him begging me not to leave him. I had no power over my body and that’s when I left him down. I broke his promise.
