I can remember the exact day like it was yesterday. It was a cold, brisk day in August. The wind swirled the trees in circles, while the daffodils tossed their heads in sprightly dance. They sat along the margin of the lake, ten thousand saw I at a glance. I wrapped my hands around her waist, as her tiny body began to shake nervously.
‘I don’t want to do this Nathan, I really don’t. My parents are going to kill me when they find out. I’ll be kicked out of the house. Those are the two words every parent dreads hearing from their 19 year old daughter. They have high expectations for me, a law degree, a masters in French and a high end job. They won’t want to call me their daughter any more’ she whispered, her voice cracking with emotion.
Her blues eyes filled with emotion as she turned to face me. I ran my thumbs along her hands, causing even more goose bumps to form on her skin. Her skin was pale, as she shook under the cold breeze.
‘No matter what happens today, you’ll always have me. I love you more than anything in the whole wide world and nothing, NOTHING will pull us apart. As cheesy as it sounds, I can’t live without you. You complete me. I got you pregnant in the first place, I’m going to support you through everything. This is my mess’ I whispered, putting my forehead against hers.
Her face dropped when I said the word ‘mess.’ I didn’t mean it like the baby was a mistake, I meant the mess that lay ahead of us. Her feet glided towards the wooden railing at the end of the pier. I walked up behind her, but refused to touch her. It was evident that she could feel my presence.
‘It takes two to tango’ she whispered, smiling cheekily up at me.
She was right though. Her parents didn’t take it well. The original plan was she’d stay at home in Gloucester with her parents and come down and visit as often as possible but when they threw her out, the plan changed. Let’s just say that her step father was not a fan of having children out of wedlock and didn’t want to attend the ‘shotgun wedding’ almost certain to follow suit. She moved to London with me permanently before finding a job as a journalist for the local newspaper. I guess news spread quickly that we were expecting a child together. The fans of course were supportive through everything, they always are. I don’t thinks there’s been a moment during the two years where the fanmily have let us down. We honestly couldn’t have asked for better fans!

My brow soaked from the bucket loads of sweat dripping down my forehead. I rubbed my eyes after walking up from my deep sleep. I checked my phone, realising that I had slept for over 4 hours, yet Lex was still undisturbed in her bed. I neared her bed, for the first time in a few hours. Due to the guilt I was feeling, I was hesitant to touch her, so instead I just stared at her beautiful face. Usually scars and bruises would disfigure someone’s face, but with Lex it was a different case. It made her look a lot more mature and tough.
I slowly moved my finger so it was inches away from her right hand. I softly rubbed her hand causing my skin to tingle. Her finger moved ever so slightly, yet it caught my attention. I rubbed my eyes, making sure it wasn’t a daydream. Her finger twitched again, this time it was followed by the movement of her whole hand.
‘Lex’ I whispered.
The movement in her hand was faint, yet very visible. There was no way I was imaging anything now as it continued to move. I pushed the large red emergency button above her head, activating a blue light adjacent to it. It flashed quickly, causing me to squint. The sound of footsteps came running towards the room, before several doctors and nurses came to a halt at the door.
‘Her her her, her hand is moving’ I stuttered moving back from the bed so they could work their magic.
They made a guard around her bed, getting me worried. I just had to take a seat and drown my sorrows. It’s times like this when you need your friends. A slight moan could be heard from the bed, followed by the gentle whispers of nurses. My eyes met the beauty lying awake yet dosey in the bed staring back at me. The nurses exited swiftly, leaving just the two of us alone.
‘Lex’ I whispered, nearing her bed slowly.
She looked at me with puppy dog eyes. My face now mirrored hers; tears dripping at an uneven pace.
‘Who are you?’ she whispered. ‘I don’t know you.’
