I stood in the back of our gaggle of people (mostly women)in the lobby of our dorm with Maxine as she went on and on about her little sister, Cameron, who Maxine said was eleven. "If she's your sister, why isn't she with us?" I asked. She frowned slightly. "I asked my alpha the same question. He said that all the children are being put in separate houses by age group and gender. So, she would be with 10-13 year-old girls."

Not really thinking before I speak, I blurted, "You're supposed to be with under 18 girls too, right?" She didn't look offended, she just laughed. "I'll be turning 19 next month, silly." My eyes widened and she raised an eyebrow. "C'mon, you didn't think I was that young, did you?"

I became distracted when Maxine and my names were called along with another girl's name. We went to the reception desk and she gave us a room key. She called the other girl's name again and somebody said she was in the bathroom and will relay the message to the girl named Nellie.

We quickly jogged up the steps to room 119 and unlocked the door. The room was pretty nicely refurbished, with cream and gold accents. There were three beds, two full bathrooms, and a nice bay window. We decided to wait for the other girl in case she had a preference for a bed.

Maxine and I chatted for a while about her family. I calmly kept the subject off of mine, I didn't feel like getting the pity treatment today. Then, a soft knock at the door made us swivel our heads towards it. A medium height, african american girl with beautiful brown curls walked through the door. She smiled and gave us a tiny wave, "My name's Nellie, I heard there was a Burgundy and a Maxine in here?"

Maxine went up to Nellie and gave her a big hug. "I'm Maxine, and this is my friend Burgundy, don't worry, she's less scary than she looks." As she said that, Maxine turned around and gave me a wink. I rolled my eyes but gave a friendly wave to Nellie.

Nellie turned out to be a very down-to-earth girl and we settled in nicely. I realized I was having more fun than I thought I would. We played cards until it was time for dinner and then we walked, joking and messing around, all the way to the Mess Hall.

Kinda short, but I really wanted to introduce Nellie to y'all today :)
