There was a long silence after that announcement was made.
Finally, it was broken by New Zealand. "Well... that's not good." The ship lurched again, underlining her words. If felt like we were climbing enormous waves, based on the way the ship was tilted and moving.
"I think we're all going to die," Australia said, quite calmly.
Canada and New Zealand scowled at him.
"What? Saying that helps me deal with fear." Aussie responded defensively.
Canada sighed. "Well, I'm going to check with the captain. Does anyone want to join me?"
"I will," Ukraine volunteered immediately. She stood up, but then the ship lurched so powerfully that both she and Canada fell over.
The lights flickered again, then plunged us all into darkness. Several countries shrieked in unexpected terror.
It was time for someone with a level head to take control.
"Everyone, stay calm!" I called out firmly. "Sit down and gather closer to my voice. I'm sure the lights will come back on soon."
I heard shuffling around me. A heavy warm weight crashed into me.
"Oof," Canada and I grunted.
"Sorry," He murmured apologetically. "It's a little hard to see."
I grumbled an unintelligible response and shoved my brother off myself.
Soon, we were all a pile of countries huddled on the floor of Poland's room.
The unsettling sensation of tilting began again. The nose of the ship tilted upward... slowly... slowly... it felt like we would start sliding back down the tremendous wave at any moment. The ship groaned. It sounded like a beast had been mortally wounded.
Suddenly, the tilting evened out. We hung in the balance for a short second.
And then we tilted forward. The ship pointed and arced downward. Some of the countries in the huddle let out terrified whimpers. My heart jumped into my throat as we plummeted down the wave.
With a huge lurch and powerful smack sound, the boat stopped dropping. Countries tumbled everywhere, flailing for balance.
"I think I'm going to be sick," someone grunted. I was too dazed to make out who had spoken.
Slowly, the ship's rocking began to slow down. Even the wind seemed lessened, even though the storm still raged powerfully outside.
Whispers began to fill the room.
"Is it over?"
"Are we safe now?"
"Holy crap, that was the scariest storm I've ever encountered at sea."
"You've never even been to sea before, numbskull!"
"Are we out of danger now?"
The lights came back on, and angry mutters and hisses could be heard as countries covered their eyes.
I squinted around the room. "Is anyone hurt?" Heads shook all around the room.
I inhaled, trying to settle my stomach. "Canada, you take Ukraine, Ireland, South Korea, and Finland; go check with the captain and find out what's going on."
"Who put you in charge?" Finland muttered, but he stood up and followed Canada out of the room.
"Stay safe!" Estonia called after them.
(List of countries still in the room: Germany, Poland, Estonia, Lithuania, New Zealand, Wales, Japan, Australia, and Belarus)
"We should find a safe place with no sharp corners," Lithuania suggested.
"Just in case we keep getting tossed around," Estonia agreed.
"Good idea. My room has very few sharp corners, and it's just down the hall." Japan offered. "It's also full of pillows."
"Then let's go," I said firmly, standing up. I shook off the lightheadedness and took a few wobbly steps towards the door of Poland's room.
The rest of the countries followed me out. As we traveled down the long hall towards Japan's suite, we could feel the ship rocking from side to side beneath our feet. The lights in the hallway kept cutting out and flickering. It was giving me a headache.
As we quickly piled into Japan's room, all the lights shut off again.
Sitting in the dark, surrounded by both friends and acquaintances, with the major storm raging outside, I couldn't help but feel a sense of looming danger.
I wondered how Canada and the others were doing. I wondered if he had made it safely to the Captain.
I wondered when I would see him again.

Freak Wave
FanfictionEverything was supposed to go well. At least, that's what the countries told themselves. They didn't expect their cruise across the Atlantic Ocean to encounter a serious storm. They also didn't expect to encounter a freak wave. With only a few hours...
