It was Saturday morning, the rain was pouring outside as it had done throughout the night. It was a dark, dingy day overall, the kind of atmosphere where there's nowhere you'd rather be than your bed. Alas, I had arranged to study with Lucius later on in the day, and wouldn't want to risk upsetting him by not showing up because I was asleep all day. Plus, my sister was home, so I wanted to savour the time I had with her since she was usually busy with work.
"Morning," I said to my sister, who stood in the kitchen cooking something for breakfast. I sat myself down on the kitchen worktop where she was stationed.
"Hey (y/n), sleep well?" She smiled, she sounded tired. Looked it, too.
"Very well, the rain always helps."
"Wish I could say the same." She handed me a plate of pancakes and sat down at the table, I followed her with concern on my face. Funny that she could always tell when I was going to wake up.
"Work?"
"Work." She sighed. I shared a sympathetic expression on my face, before beginning to eat as she did. We sat in a comfortable silence for a few minutes.
"Any plans for the day?" She broke the silence between mouthfuls of her food.
"Bold of you to assume I have any friends," I scoffed with a smile, taking another bite of my food. She chuckled with a shake of her head, probably so used to my self deprecating sarcasm that it just seemed normal half of the time. "But yes, I do. Just studying with someone." She gave me a curious look.
"Who's someone? Do I know them?"
"Nah, he lives down this street."
"He?" She smiled, propping a hand on her cheek to smile at me with even more curiosity, eyebrows raised as she waited for an answer. I shook my head. It dawned on me that maybe giving away too much information about Lucius might not be the best plan, I didn't want her to know what I'd seen. Not yet, anyway. I opened my mouth to say something just as sarcastic as the last response so I could cover my tracks, but was interrupted as a thorough knock on the door startled us both. Talia frowned at me as she placed her fork on the table and stood up. "Its a bit early, don't you think?"
As Talia made her way to the front door and I followed behind her like a sheep, I couldn't help but wonder if it was Lucius. Then again, I really couldn't picture him knocking on the door knowing full well he'd have to interact with someone that wasn't me. I peeked around the door frame to the front room as I watched my sister open the door, and was shocked to see a couple of police officers there, I'm sure Talia felt exactly the same considering she'd been gone for two weeks. "Hello." She said quietly, confusion in her tone.
"Good morning miss (l/n), I take it you've heard about the recent deaths in this town?" The closest police officer asked. My heart skipped a beat, surely they don't know about me being there, do they? He doesn't seem particularly concerned, I thought to myself. I shuffled towards the door and stood behind Talia, as I felt as though hiding would make it worse.
"I have, yes." She responded.
"We're just going door to door to make sure nobody has any information on the case as we're still trying to put the pieces together, the two girls' families are distraught," I felt my heart sink. Though what I had witness had sunk in a while ago, I couldn't help but feel immense survivors guilt. "Did you see anything suspicious on that day?"
Talia shook her head. "Nothing, I was working out of town from 8am to 10pm." She glanced at me and stepped to the side to reveal me to the police officers who looked at me expectantly. I shook my head too.
"No, nothing." I'd like to think I covered my tracks as well as I could, but I knew I didn't sound exactly convincing. The police officer stared at me for a few seconds, delaying his response. My breathing quickened as I panicked more and more.
"Alright," he eventually said. "Well, thanks for your time, have a good day." He smiled, before the two of them headed away from the door and into the neighbours garden. Phew. Talia seemed relieved as she closed the door and locked it.
"Crazy to think that happened so close to us. So sad," she made her way back to the kitchen. "Make sure stay where it's busy when you're out of the house, (y/n). And always make sure you know who you're dealing with."
I swallowed, anxiety rushing through my veins and making me feel quite faint, all of a sudden. A sense of dread wrapped itself around my chest, again. I glanced outside the window, Lucius stood patiently waiting for me outside.
