I was excited to get my African Ancestry DNA kit! Strangers knew more about me than I did. My DNA would find my "tribe".
Each swab of my inner cheek, I imagined being back in Africa. Surrounded by the spirits of my slave ancestors. Daydreaming about such a magical reunion, I drew blood. Didn't matter! I put pink cotton swab in envelope. I swabbed the other cheek with the same passion.
It was four months of opening and closing the mailbox, until I received my results. My heart knew my DNA was Ghanaian, maybe even Ewe. Traveling to Ghana three times, I knew my genes would reflect my emotional connections.
In front of my computer - I was going Live! My new spiritual friends would love to share in this experience!
Opened the folder and BOOM!
Silence. This probably wasn't a good idea.
The certificate read: The Mende People Living in Sierra Leone
I wanted to be Ghanaian. The movie I rehearsed in my head slowly evaporating as I read. After a five second delay, I faked a smiled and continued reading aloud. I couldn't pretend. I was visibly disappointed. I didn't have connections to Sierra Leone.
I called my mother. She was excited!
"I just imaged my great, great, great, grandmother leaving Sierra Leone boarding a slave ship. Oh my goodness! I can't image what she might of felt! Oh!" Her enthusiasm helped, a little.
So, I researched. Learning about Mende culture hopefully would activate something within me.
Amistad! Ok! Smart and very intellectual people of Sierra Leone! Ok, we're on to something! I can't change my family and where I come from, so I embraced it.
My voice, "Find a Mende group on Facebook."
Typing Mende in group search, several groups appeared. Click on first group, joined and introduced myself.
Three minuted later, Bing! Facebook Message Request
"Hi, I'm here to help you with the Mende stuff. If you permit me."
I thought to myself, sure why not. What could happen?
