Day Two
The dreams came each time I closed my eyes. I could hear voices as I drifted in and out. "You know she's a half-cast." The two women were sitting in the distance, but their gossips were very clear. I could see the hills in the distance, but no bridge. Instead I was snatched into a New York city loft. The walls, like the people were white.
Everyone was enjoying the party. As for myself, I was trying to maneuver around, leaping and jumping from one wooden slap to the next. The wooden floor had little slits of open space between various planks of wood. I noticed the other party-goers walked about the room without hop-scotching around the room. A beautiful wooden floor sparkled under their feet.
I was the only person hopping from plank to plank. Something else was very peculiar, there wasn't cement or dirt between the cracks, but a sky! A beautiful clear sky was beneath me. Calm clouds passed under the floor. I gazed down, then around the room, then back down. I most definitely was seeing the sky beneath my feet! No one seemed to care or notice my predicament. I stood and watched the clouds. I stood and watched the the white men bellowing with their mouths to the ceiling. The women floated around the room. I jumped over to a window. There was still a sky above. I had to pivot on one leg and leap where two planks could hold my weight. I whispered, "Why am I having so much trouble? "
"Do I need to jump over the gaps or fall through them? "
I woke up.
My voice enlightened me again...This isn't your world.
I could still hear the voices of the two women. Now their criticisms were, muffled. My attention was on a grey-faced image of myself. I thought I was awake, but I was still asleep. My eyes were open, yet I could still see my dream. Another voice whispered, "you can decide who you will be. You have the power to decide."
Little Creatures go Humping in the Night
Total sleep came back quickly. It was another group setting. Couples were sitting around a table. The atmosphere was elegant. White, upholstered high-back sofas lined the walls. The lighting was dim. Gorgeous women with flowing hair were sitting beside their masculine partners. This time we were not in mixed company. Everyone was a reflection of me, various hues of mahogany and caramel.
As before, the men were apologizing trying to revive their relationships. The couples were pledging their love for one another. For me, unfortunately, there was nothing or no one for me to declare my love to.
All of a sudden, a Gollum-like creature appears, jumps across the pristine white table and attaches himself to my leg! He begins to hump my leg like a chihuahua. I was paralyzed! I could only look! I was disgusted and amazed. I didn't understand what was happened! None of the couples seemed to care. They continued as if nothing was happening! He finished as any self-pleasing man would. I wanted to clean my leg from his accomplishments, but I still couldn't move.
I was snatched back into consciousness and took a shower.
Day Three
My dreams were silent, but Nyakeh wasn't.
"Hello, how are you?" He always started every interaction with pleasantries.
"I'm good, just tired. Is everything going OK? Am I doing things right here?"
"You are blocked yourself." He didn't waste anytime. "You aren't allowing yourself to see what you need to."
"What am I doing?" No one from the village had given me any directions or instructions. The only advice was given by the Chief here in America. He told me to relax and concentrate. The Chief had called me to make sure I was ready. He rarely called, so I knew this was an important step for me.
"You are not open to receive what you need?" Nyakeh's voice was frustrated. "You are too attached to things - physically."
"How? What happened?"
"You aren't doing what you need to! People are counting on you! You are attached to people here and you aren't letting yourself see or do what needs to be done!"
"I'm not attached to anything physically!" Now I was frustrate! I wanted to cuss, but I knew his African sensibilities couldn't take my American expressions. He was throwing out acquisitions without solutions.
"You're so attached to this physical world, you're almost blind!" Nyakeh was not helping. If I was too attached, then I needed help. I needed answers! I needed Mr. Lahai!
Me: Hi, Mr. Lahai. How are you?
Mr. Lahai: Hello Ndolagei. I'm fine. How are you and the children?
Me: We're all good here.
Mr. Lahai: I know Nyakeh is confused.
Me: Yes, sir. He said I'm too attached physically and something is blocking me.
Mr. Lahai: Yes, I know what he is talking about. I always knew but it wasn't time to deal with it yet. Some people have seen who you are and never want you to learn your true self.
Me: What do I need to do?
Mr. Lahai: Don't worry my dear. We will handle things here.
Me: What's Nyakeh's problem?
Mr. Lahai: My dear you should already know the answer.
Me: I'm still trying to understand everything. It's all new and different to me.
Mr. Lahai: Yes, my dear things will become clearer over time.
Mr. Lahai always made me feel better. I called Nyakeh and reported exactly what Mr. Lahai told me. Nyakeh was quite. I could sense his anxiety, but there was nothing I could do about it.
Nyakeh wanted to sleep. He promised to speak with me in the morning.
I slept easily for hours. The vibrations of my phone knocking against the nightstand scared me. Nyakeh was calling. I swiped right.
"Hello?" I tried to soften my heavy sleep voice.
"Hello, how are you? I hope I didn't wake you." From his three missed calls,I knew that was a lie. "Did you see anything last night?"
"No, what do you mean? I didn't have anymore dreams."
"In your house! Did you see anything?"
"No. What are you talking about?" Maybe I was still half asleep, but I didn't understand what Nyakeh was asking me.
"Mr. Lahai showed me a few things. I came to visit you last night. Someone was there."
"What are you talking about? I don't understand?" I had no idea what Nyakeh was talking about. He was at my house? How?
"I was trying to bring you a gift. But I was stopped. Hmmm. I was stopped... Hmmm. " Nyakeh was stalling.
"What do you mean? You were here? How? And who was here? I didn't have company last night." I keep repeating myself. "Who was here? Who was in my house?"
Nyakeh was silent. I held the phone waiting for an answer.
"Hmmm, your mother."
