When Asake came to, the world appeared lopsided. It felt like she was falling from the heavens, diving into darkness, plummeting back into her body. Everything around her twisted about, coiling like tendrils of the smoke that rose from the unlit fire in her stomach. The pain came crashing back as she slowly woke up from unconsciousness. At first, the things that had happened in the past couple of days seemed like a dream. They almost slipped away from her like fog in the early morning sun. Almost.
Her right eye was swollen shut, causing her to be blind on that side. Her left eye darted around, but she couldn't focus on anything else around her. Small burns dotting her body, covering the black and blue bruises that slowly spread across her pale skin. The open wounds should have hurt her, but they paled in comparison to the pain in her chest. Nothing could be worse than the pain in her chest. Asake cried out with agonizing sobs, hanging her head in shame. A scream echoed in her prison chamber. Was that her? Did Asake really scream? She had no idea. She could hardly hold herself up because the feelings of pain and shame were so intense.
How had she allowed him to violate her like that? Why didn't she fight back?
Asake felt so weak. Inside and out. Her muscles strained as she tried to rip the chains out of the wall, another cry escaping her lips. She didn't have enough strength to break out of this cell, let alone the prison in her mind. There was no way she would be able to face anyone ever again. What would they say about her when they found out what happened to her? She was better off dead. That was the only way out of this place.
After what felt like an eternity, she heard something that felt like hope. "My frogs!" a voice echoed outside her chamber. She struggled to lift her head up, her skin pimpling. That didn't sound like any of the guards or Zasai. Did that mean that someone else was a prisoner here? "Come back and stop thawing out!" There was something familiar about that voice. She just couldn't figure out who it was. "Wait! My friends need to suck on those frogs!"
The desire to get out of this prison overpowered everything else in her body. The pain grew distant, and the shame dissipated. The fire in the pit of her stomach grew into a blazing boil. She had to get out right now. Asake needed to escape or else she would suffocate slowly in here.
She growled and allowed the fire to burn through her stiff fingers. The chains around her wrists and arms grew warm, hot enough to burn her if she dared to touch them. In a fit of rage, she screamed again. Red-hot fire burst out of her mouth and billowed out in front of her like a dragon letting out its final breath. The chains wouldn't budge at all. Asake grunted as she kicked around, trying to get out of them. She would try anything to get out of here. Anything.
Before she could break her wrist, something slammed against the door, and her movements ceased. Her chest heaved up and down from all of the exertion she had put on her body. If it was Zhao, she was ready to hurt him for what he had done to her.
The door squealed as it opened, and she was startled to see a man with a blue mask standing in front of her. With her good eye, she noticed the Avatar standing next to him. Both looked surprised to see her.
"We don't have a lot of time," the Avatar said, glancing around the two of them. He looked like he was ready to jump out of his skin. "Why are we getting her? She helped Prince Zuko hunt me and my friends!"
The man didn't answer him. Instead, he leaped forward. Asake blew out a breath of fire, but the man jumped out of the way before it could hit him. "You think you can hurt me?" Asake asked, her voice hoarse. "I'm not someone who will take that."
