I yawned again. It was 5:00 AM on Saturday. The reason I was up so early was so I could work on my new super suit. I was looking at the sketch, but I realized something I had drawn wasn't there.
Oh, no. I must have drawn it on the other sketch.
The one I left at City Hall!
I had to go get it before it was too late in the morning.
I knew I had to make it to City Hall before Mr. Madison did, and I didn't have time to put together an entire outfit. But I couldn't just go in my pajamas! I would freeze!
I looked at the suit. It was my only option.
Even though it was early, there were still a few people out. I tried to keep a low profile so I wouldn't attract too much attention to myself.
So I unlocked City Hall, praying Mr. Madison wasn't there yet, and luckily the building was empty.
I looked through the stack of papers on my desk, which took awhile. I thought it was there. Why wasn't it there?!
I tried to remember what I did yesterday.
Then I panicked.
I organized a bunch of papers for Mr. Madison yesterday. Had it gotten mixed in?!
I raced over to Mr. Madison's desk and started frantically scrambling through all the papers. Looking for my sketch. If he saw it...
Then I heard a noise from behind me. I turned around, but no one was there.
So I continued to look through the papers but found nothing.
I went to the other side of the desk and started going through the drawers, but a paper sitting on top the the trash can caught my eye. I could see writing on it. So I pulled it out and sat down to read it.
Dear Macy,
I know it's been awhile since we last spoke. I'm starting to regret giving you the plane ticket to Hawaii. The vacation lasted longer than we agreed on. Where are you? Leila is absolutely falling apart. I want to help her, but I don't know how. She's been very sususpicious lately. Are you ever going to come back? She says you never answer her messages. I think all she wants is to hear from you. Please. She misses you. And so do I. And I hope to see you soon.
Clover Madison
I set the letter down, shaken. Mr. Madison gave my mom a plane ticket? I hadn't realized it, but I did miss my mom. I really did just want her to say something, let me know that she still knew I existed.
I don't know how long I was asleep, but I knew I was curled up, not very comfortably, and I knew I was in trouble when I heard "Lightinga?"
The voice was sleepy, but I knew it.
I stretched then turned around to find Dash Boy. I was thinking up something cleverly evil to say when I saw the look of horror on his face. Super Sun was there, too.
At first I was confused, but then it dawned on me. My hood was down again. I reached behind my neck to pull it up, just to find it was sitting snugly on my head.
I began to worry, but then I realized I was fine. I still had my mask, after all. I put my hand to my face to confirm this thought, and my face developed the same look of horror as I realized my mistake.
I left my mask at home.
"Leila?!" Super Sun, or should I say Sunshine, shrieked.
There was no way to hide it. With tears in my eyes, I nodded.
Mason tore off his own mask, showing the tears in his eyes. I wanted to throw up. "Why?!" He exclaimed, and Sunshine peeled her mask off as well.
"Guys," I sobbed, unable to control the tears. "This is who I really am." I dropped to the floor. "It's who I've always been. It's... who I always will be."
They got down next to me. And they actually looked like they cared. "What do you mean?"
"My dad," I hiccuped. "The Evil Lightning Lord." Super Sun started to frown, but I could still see concern for me in her eyes. "I've been with him my whole life. I've always been like this. Evil. The whole Leila thing..." I had to stop for a minute, gasping for breath. "It's not real. I'm just the daughter of a bad guy, and I'm bad too. And I can't do anything about it. The lies... they're countless. I've lied so much." I was just spilling it all out, all the things I'd felt for so long.
"It's alright," Mason put a hand on my shoulder. "You can still change. We can help you."
"No!" I screamed, looking up with my red face. I could feel my mark throbbing. My vision was so yellow, it was blinding. "I... I've done too much. I can't change. And... I know you guys were never really my friends! Because you're always together! You don't care about me at all! I'm Lightinga! Leila is a cover! She's fake! Which means we were never friends! We never will be!" And I ran. It had started pouring rain, but my suit was already soaked with tears. I ran home as fast as I could and locked myself in my room.
Then I cried some more.
