Part 16 - Worth the Wait
Steven’s POV
“Well, I was wondering if you’d ever show up Steven.”
I froze. How did she know my name. I looked down to the small name tag on her shirt. Beth. Why did that name sound so familiar.
“Rose isn’t here. So I’d go back from where ever you came from,” she said, a hard look in her eyes.
I looked back up. “Beth?”
“Good you can read. That’s a relief. Now let’s see how well you can listen.” She pointed to the door, but I held my ground.
“Rose told me all about you,” I said lamely.
She smirked. “And I was lucky enough to hear all about you. Now, get out of here. Rose doesn’t need this right now. She’s got enough on her plate. There’s no room for more heartache.”
I felt my heart sink. I knew that I caused Rose pain, and I hated myself for it. I spent the last four months trying to settle my affairs back in Illinois. I needed her in my life. I didn’t know if she’d take me back, but I was sick of waiting around. It was time to do something about it. “Beth, hear me out. I know I cause Rose a lot of pain, and I hate myself for that. But I want to be in her life. I love her, with everything I’ve got.” I felt a tear prickle my eye, and I felt my heart tremble in my chest. Not very manly I know, but at that point I didn’t care. I just needed my angel.
She seemed to ponder that for a moment. “Are you telling the truth? Because if you’re here to mess around with her heart, then save yourself the trouble.”
“I am not messing around Beth. She’s my everything,” I said, looking down. My throat felt dry and I felt sick to my stomach. But I had to find her first.
“If she’s your everything, where have you been the past four months?” she asked, eyebrow raised. “You haven’t seen the way she is. She was so broken, that it took four months to put her back together again. She still won’t open up to me completely. But now with the ba-” she cut herself off with a blank expression.
“With the what? What’s wrong with Rose?” I asked, panicked now.
“Nothing. Nothing. Never mind what I said. Just understand that she can’t take anymore of this. It isn’t good for her.”
“I understand that completely. I just want to talk to her; to explain things that I couldn’t before. Where is she? Please?” I practically begged.
I saw Beth’s face scrunch up for a moment as she considered telling me. I could really see how much Rose meant to her, and I was grateful that Rose had someone like Beth in her life.
Beth sighed, and looked me dead in the eye. “Don’t make me regret this Steven.” I nodded in understanding. “Rose is at the doctor’s office on Main Street. She should be going in any minute, so you’d better hurry.”
I smiled, and thanked her for telling me before I bolted out the door. I jumped in my truck and headed down the street. But there was a question nagging in the back of my head....why was Rose at the doctor?

Beth’s POV
He looked so heartbroken that I wanted to burst out into tears. I now understand how Rose fell for him. Yes, he was definitely easy on the eyes, but I could tell that he was more than sincere when it came to her. He, without a doubt, loved her with all his heart. I silently prayed that this was the happy ending that Rose deserved.
